During my days as a radio columnist for The Star, I did an experiment to check if all our radio stations' time pips were correct as they claim they were. Most of us grew up with the habit of adjusting our watches to radio time on FM especially on New Year's Eve.

Well, with a high tech digital shortwave radio from Sony, I was shocked to discover the answer! None of our radio - and even television broadcasts had it right. In fact, some of them were even as many as seven seconds apart.
However, when I checked the time pips of at least
four broadcasters such as the BBC World Service, Voice Of America, Radio Australia and Radio Singapore International, they were all amazingly perfectly synchronised! This despite the fact that they were from different continents of the earth.
So this is my New Year Eve tip. If you are thinking of doing it with out local radio; please don't bother! Local radio stations were often most irritated with me when I made that observation.
So if you want to do some time-tuning tonight, your chances with world broadcast radio on shortwave or the Internet would be much better.
Don't try it with Astro TV as all the broadcasts are delayed for censorship purposes by the government.
Happy New Year all!
