An Animal-friendly "Gun" for Stray Dogs.

PETPOSITIVE was among two nongovernmental organisations this morning to have a sneak peek at Majlis Perbandaran Klang's (MPK) new and innovative gadget to trap strays in the municipality.
Called, "Skynet 01", MPK has come up with a contraption that looks like a futuristic gun which can shoot out a net within a short range and ensnare a stray dog, cat, bird or even a goat.
It's very effective when it's fired correctly even at a stray that is making a speedy getaway.
The snare is very gentle on the dog - and even has a calming effect on the animal.
This makes it easier for the dogcatchers to then lift the canine with it still securely in the net and transfer it into the dog-catching vehicle.
I was impressed with MPK for coming up with this great idea all on their own - especially to ensure its animal-friendly and humane features.
Skynet, however, can't be used in every situation. Dogcatchers still have to rely on their traditional methods like the loop and others to catch strays in other areas.
Besides Petpositive, MPK had also invited SPCA Selangor and a representative from the Fire and Rescue Department to the meeting to give their reactions.
The Council will be seeking to obtain a copyright for their design before officially launching it before the end of the year.
MPK also hopes to enter their invention in local and international awards competition before promoting the gadget to other local councils in the country.

Action to be taken against clinic car park abuse
Hi everybody, I have reported this matter to Encik Azmizam
Penyelaras Dun Pelabuhan Klang who is now in Sarawak. He has promised to take action over the matter.
Healthcare professionals and staff should be the first to set an example to the public about not abusing disabled friendly car parks.
By not doing so, it would be a dereliction of their duties as well as an insult to Majlis Perbandaran Klang for providing the facilities in the first place. 🐜

Councils need a pound to keep captured animals, says Anthony

ALL local councils should have a pound to keep captured stray animals, said Petpositive president Anthony Thanasayan.
Anthony, who is also a councillor of the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ), said a local council should be responsible to take care of the animals they catch.
“There should be a place to keep these animals. If the animals are pets belonging to someone, the pound will be the first place they look,” he told The Star.
“Some of the stray animals should be kept for at least seven days or be re-homed and put up for adoption,” he said, adding that the city council would then have the option to take action against animals that are unwanted.

He also said that the city council could use the taxpayers’ money to build a pound.
“The people, will, in fact, respect the mayor for that,” he said.
Anthony was commenting on Ipoh Datuk Bandar Datuk Roshidi Hashim’s statement in The Star yesterday that a pound was neither suitable nor effective.
Roshidi had said a pound was much worse as the animals would have to be locked up in cages and that diseases would spread from one animal to another.
Anthony noted that it was poor thinking on the part of the mayor.
“The spreading of diseases is not the fault of the pound but of its management.
“To cope with viruses and diseases from spreading is why we cooperate with the Veterinary Services Department (DVS).
“The department has the expertise to control viruses and diseases from spreading and the pound can be sanitised,” he added.
Anthony also said MBPJ did not have a pound but was working towards setting up one.
“We are currently sending captured animals to the Paws Animal Welfare Society’s animal shelter.
“The MBPJ will pay them RM20 for each dog or cat taken in,” he said, adding that the Klang Municipal Council (MPK) would soon open its model pound, which could be the benchmark for other local councils to follow.
Both the MBPJ and MPK did not hire contractors to catch stray dogs, he added.
“The enforcement officers from both councils catch stray dogs themselves,” he said.
Anthony also urged the Ipoh City Council to be more transparent when handling related issues.
“It is fine to catch the dogs upon receiving a complaint from the public. There is nothing to be afraid of; just tell the truth and explain to the public how they handle the animals,” he said.
The Ipoh City Council has clarified that the stray dogs caught are put down by way of lethal injection and are buried at the Papan landfill.

Good News For Dogs In Klang

GOOD NEWS for dogs in MPK's pound in Klang. SPCA Selangor Chief Christine Chin has volunteered to add as many as 10 cages to house canines caught caught by the MPK for their pound.
The arrangement was made by the Department of Veterinary Services' veterinarian Dr Thiba Rajoo.
"The special wire cages will help the pound to be more organised and offer more comfort and room for the dogs kept in the MPK pound," pointed out Dr Thiba.
The latest effort is part of a number of immediate measures taken by the MPK to help make life more comfortable for canines caught by the Council and housed in their temporary pound.
The action came after an official visit by the Canine Advisory Team or CAT experts from the Petaling Jaya City Council which is the first and only council in the state and possibly in the country to have a special committee to deal with canine concerns.
Meanwhile, several animal rights and welfare NGOs are meeting today at the Petpositive Therapy Centre in Petaling Jaya, Selangor.
The meeting, coordinated by the Malaysian Animal-Assisted Therapy for the Disabled and Elderly Association (Petpositive), is to come out with an effective strategy for NGOs to work with local councils on issues of animal concerns.
The two-hour meeting will involve PETPOSITIVE, SPCA Selangor, Save-A-Stray, a vet from the Department of Veterinary Services and an expert animal rescuer from Klang.
