Suhakam to Follow Up with MBPJ on Wheelchair Discrimination Issue.

DATELINE PETALING JAYA:

THE HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION OF MALAYSIA or SUHAKAM says it will be following up on its letter written a fortnight ago to the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) expressing its deep concern over the discrimination incident in which the Petaling Jaya Sivan Temple in Bukit Gasing came up with a policy barring wheelchair using devotees from its venue.

Suhakam wrote to MBPJ to give its explanation over the issue.

The decision by the temple was immediately condemned by the Malaysian Hindu Sangam on the Free Malaysia Today portal. 

A group of disabled people also protested against the temple

management in their venue. 

The Bukit Gasing state assemblyman Rajiv Risyakaran did not turn up during the protest despite being invited by the disabled group. 

There has been no updates from him or MBPJ councillors Cynthia Gabriel (councillor for the temple) and Pastor Sia Siew Chin (in wheelchair) since the incident was highlighted to them more than a month ago.

The disabled are demanding the removal of all discriminatory practices against them by the temple and for the elected and appointed representatives to state a stand that they are totally committed to a zero tolerance policy on prejudice against the handicapped.

Suhakam Plays Big Brother To The Disabled

DATELINE KUALA LUMPUR:

PUBLIC BUILDINGS in Malaysia that previously fail or refuse to provide wheelchair access for Malaysians with disabilities will soon have another "Big Brother" disability advocate breathing down their necks.

The latest champions are the unlikely but influential group called the Malaysian Human Rights Commission or Suhakam.

The government body will lead a band of disability experts - who are most importantly disabled themselves - to check government offices, hotels and popular hang-out spots to see if they are accessible to the disabled.


The special access committee will include representatives from the major categories of disability groups such as the blind, Deaf, people with learning difficulties and the physically handicapped.


The spot-checks that are conducted early next year will include the media in an attempt to shame non friendly sites.

Suhakam will be teaming up with Petpositive and other NGOs to bring this about.


The Petaling Jaya City Council's disability access team will also be invited into the endeavour.
