NEWSFLASH! Support for MPS Canine Committee Overwhelming

PETPOSITIVE SELAYANG K9 COMMITTEE UPDATE:

SUPPORT FOR CAT - the Canine Advisory Team from the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) - continues to flow in since PET+BLOGSPOT reported that the Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) will be setting up a canine committee by the end of this month.
 
Reactions to our story over the past couple of days have been overwhelming. 

We have been receiving views from several parts across the nation in the form of comment messages, emails to PETPOSITIVE's Yahoo Inbox and Short Messaging Service (SMS).

Almost all of them have been praising MPS and CAT for reaching what they describe as "an exciting breakthrough" in the area of animal rights and welfare.


"Thank you CAT for working together - rather than against - the MPS," wrote Harvind from Bukit Rawang Jaya in Selangor. 

"I was thrilled to hear that our Dato' Yang DiPertua (Governor) had agreed to make changes in dog care in our municipality," she added. 

"This is such a timely and welcome piece of news after all the negative reports we have been hearing lately about canine treatment in our Rawang pound.

"I have no doubt that things are going to improve from now on since your Blog's thrilling piece of news disclosure." Harvind concluded.
 
"Although we don't have a special canine committee in our local government in Penang yet, I think our state should emulate Selangor and set up one as soon as possible to help our dogs, cats and other animals too," emailed Sam Chong from Island Glades. 


"CAT should spread its influence to all the local councils in Selangor - like you have achieved in MBPJ and MPK (Klang Municipal Council) - in order to work for change for our animals, added Chong.


"Meowrr! Keep up your good work with CAT!" He concluded.
 
"The setting up of a canine committee in MPS like CAT is definitely a step in the right direction," commented Fauwaz Yusoff from Section 19 in Shah Alam, Selangor. 

"Such a committee should be tasked to oversee the pound, ensuring that none of the strays entrusted in its care are ill-treated in any way because all animals are also created by Allah," he added. 

"Every effort should be taken to make sure only the right methods, that is, humane ones are used to catch and trap strays. 


"That is why the people in the canine committee should also be  carefully selected. Only those who have some sincere feelings for animals should be invited to sit in the committee. 

"I agree totally that not all the animal NGOs should be invited into the committee. Only those that have no personal agendas, are registered as not-for-profit with the Registrar Of Societies and are non belligerent should be roped in," concluded Yusoff. 


"Fighting and condemning local councils is NOT the way to go about in working with the government," SMSed Leela Nathan from Pandamaran, Klang. 

"Only the dogs suffer in the end," she added.

"One should always get the cooperation of the local councils if we sincerely want to bring about change for our animals." 

"We should try our best to work with the authorities or try out various strategies if one fails. If we can't do that, then it is best for us to keep our mouths shut than to aggravate the situation with name-calling and degrading insults," said Nathan. 


The canine committee of MPS will be launched as soon as it is officially formed in a month's time.


Once established, the newly appointed committee will tackle a wide range of topics and issues. These will include proper and humane pound management to dog catching methods, education and responsible pet ownership.

NEWSFLASH! Pet Lovers Laud Change; Having High Hopes for Dogs in Selayang and Rawang

DATELINE PETALING JAYA: 

PET LOVERS are hailing yesterday's Newsflash in PET+BLOGSPOT (BIG CHANGE SOON IN DOG CARE IN SELAYANG) about a significant shift of approach towards animals by the Selayang Municipal Council (MPS).

In a meeting chaired by MPS Head Yang DiPertua Dato Zainal Abidin Azim, the promise that the local council will see to it that the treatment of all animals within the municipality will be done with care and respect is being seen by animal lovers and veterinarians alike as a major breakthrough in the area of animal rights and welfare concerns.
 
Leading the list of delighted readers is Erica Chum.

Chum, an individual pet rescuer, was the first to highlight the poor conditions of the dog pound in Selayang to animal welfare groups and blogs last month.

In fact, she told PET+BLOGSPOT that she has been concerned about the pound (which was located elsewhere previously) for several years. 

"I used to wake up at 6am every weekends to cook food for the dogs," she said. "I would then carry 8 kilograms of rice and dog kibble together with canned food and travel a good way to MPS to feed the pound dogs," she added. 

"I also use to bail out injured dogs and puppies and rush them to the veterinary clinic using my own hard-earned money to pay for their expenses.

"I am so happy that the MPS President has stepped in to resolve the issue. My thanks also go out to all the councillors involved in yesterday's meeting."

Former MPS Councillor for Zone 16 Gurdip Kaur was also ecstatic by the news. 

"I certainly think that MPS has made a very commendable move by wanting to set up a canine committee to look into animal rights and welfare issues - as well as concerns by non pet-lovers in the constituency," she said whilst being interviewed on the telephone. 

Gurdip, who is also instrumental in setting up an OKU committee in MPS says it is now up the the council to keep up to its word to carry out its promise.

"Having served and worked with the local council for a year, I have no doubt that MPS will carry out what it says under the leadership of the Dato YDP," concluded Gurdip who has a service dog by the name of Dusty.

A resident from Selayang who wishes only to be identified as Kitty Kat, emailed us at petpositive@yahoo.com to congratulate members of the Canine Advisory Team (CAT) and YB Dr Xavier Jayakumar, the Selangor state executive director of Health for initiating the latest victory:

"I have been following some of the blogs and postings that have been condemning CAT and you Mr Thanasayan for your excellent efforts in diplomacy and dialogue - all to bring a better quality of care for the hapless animals at the pound.

"They must all be eating humble pie with the latest news. Serves them right too. 

"I hope that by your perseverance, politeness and respect for both animals and humans, CAT will continue to make a difference for all animals - both the two-legged and four-legged - at the local councils.

"CAT has been able to do what even the SPCA, MDDB, SAS could not do recently or over the years. Keep on meowing all the way to greater victories to you and your intrepid team!" Concluded Kitty Kat. 


Yesterday's meeting decided to focus on several urgent matters.

They include ensuring the dogs at the pound were fed properly and animals that are sick are put down promptly by the DVS or a veterinarian. 


Meanwhile CAT Chairman Anthony Thanasayan cautions that yesterday was only a first meeting. 

"Please don't expect instant changes," he says. 

"It would take several more weeks and months before everything is put in place properly," he adds.      

"The fact that the YDP is now involved fully in matters regarding the pound; the Department of Veterinary Services - both in Gombak and Putrajaya's - professional guidance is being sought together with regular spot-checks conducted; the MPS councillors are heading the committee and YB Dr Xavier is being briefed on the latest developments is plenty reason enough for all of us to remain highly optimistic that the changes that we are looking for will definitely come about.

"And what a great day that will be for MPS itself, when it does!" Thanasayan concluded.

Canines On The Discussion Table In MPS Tomorrow

After more than a month of waiting, some good news at last!

Our President and Chairman of the Canine Advisory Team (CAT) Anthony SB Thanasayan will finally be meeting up with the Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) this week.                                 

The reason is to discuss matters related to dogs.

Readers of PET+BLOGSPOT will recall how Our President visited the MPS dog pound a month ago (Background Info) to offer assistance to the council in pound management and animal care.

His first meeting together with PETPOSITIVE'S Acting Secretary Shenaaz Khan (under CAT) proved fruitful with MPS promising to set up a permanent committee on dogs similar to Petaling Jaya City Council and Klang Municipal Council's CAT. 


Thanasayan was told that he would be invited to that meeting in a month's time from his first discussion.

However, little details is known about the upcoming meeting or how it is going to take shape. 

It appears as if only several MPS councillors, MPS staff, and members from the Department of Veterinary Services have been invited to the occasion. 


It is not known if Our President's participation will be a permanent feature or just a one-off appearance.


"Whatever the case, My main goal is to play an instrumental role - if I can - to see to it that the MPS is run properly with regular help and monitoring from the DVS," Thanasayan told this Blog.   


The MPS meeting has been set for Friday tomorrow.   




"The latest reports I heard indicate that the MPS pound is in good hands," said Thanasayan."The Council is working closely with the DVS and a representative has been attending our CAT events." He added.



Congratulations, meanwhile, are in order to Independent Living and Training Centre (ILTC) members Francis Siva and Gurdip Kaur for getting themselves into the executive committee of the Malaysian Spinal Injuries Association (MASIA) last Sunday.


Serving as ILTC president and secretary in their own Nongovernmental organisation respectively, both Siva and Gurdip a.k.a Rina were elected as committee members at MASIA's 13th Annual General Meeting in Bandar Baru Sentul in Kuala Lumpur. 


More than 50 members gathered at the event with bright hopes of rejuvenating the once-popular disability NGO. 

Quite surprisingly, the AGM unearthed reports of mismanagement and misuse of funds by previous two senior executive committee members. 

A resolution was passed by the Sunday meeting for an investigation to be carried out on the duo as soon as possible and be followed up by a police report if the allegations are found to be true. 


On Tuesday, the ILTC was invited to a top working committee meeting of disabled activists with the Ministry of Transport (MOT). 

Speaking to PET+BLOGSPOT recently, Siva commented: "I was thrilled to be invited to this event as it gives us an opportunity to put forward our views in an official way so that action will be taken as swiftly as possible in the area of public transportation for the handicapped in our country." 


A follow-up access audit exercise to check out the wheelchair-friendly facilities at the KLIA and LCCT airports in Sepang is expected to be held sometime next week. 

Tuesday's meeting with the disabled was held at the headquarters of the MOT in Putrajaya.
