Rottweiler Saves Rape Victim

PETPOSITIVE SAYS:

WHEN ROTTWEILERS get on the news, it is almost always for bad news. In Malaysia anyway. Here is a brilliant story on the mail online of a brilliantly brave rottie by the name of Jake who saved a woman from being raped. Thanks so much to Petpositive volunteer Jessy Chahal for emailing us this item.

Read on guys . . .

A judge has praised a hero dog after he chased off a sex attacker who indecently assaulted a woman in a park.

Two-year-old Rottweiler Jake was on his usual evening walk with owner Liz Maxted-Bluck, 49, when he heard screaming from a dense woodland and ran to investigate.

He found Esmahil Adhami, 18, molesting a woman he had dragged into the undergrowth.
The fearless hound lunged at the illegal immigrant and chased him away - and then circled the sobbing victim 'like a guard dog' until the police arrived.

Jake, a former rescue dog, has now been commended for his actions by a judge who jailed Iranian-born Adhami for four years after he was convicted of sexual assault.

Sentencing at Warwick Crown Court, Judge Christopher Hodson said: 'I have not the slightest doubt that if that dog had not come bounding up, worse would have happened to that lady.'
Dog owner Mrs Maxted-Bluck, a professional musician, said: 'Jake was just incredible and probably saved the woman from being raped.

'He has always hated conflict so when he heard her screaming he must have known someone was in trouble.
'After he ran back to the woman I rang the police and he circled us like he was guarding us. The woman was very grateful.'

The court heard how Jake and Mrs Maxted-Bluck were enjoying an evening walk on Hearsall Common, Coventry, West Midlands, at 6pm on July 1 last year when his ears suddenly pricked up.

Attack: Esmahil Adhami, 18, dragged a woman aged in her 20s, in the bushes as she was walking through Hearsall Common. He is likely to be deported after his release from prison

Just minutes earlier Adhami had chosen his victim, a woman aged in her 20s, while cycling through the park. He dropped his bike and flashed at her before dragging her into the bushes.
Rhona Campbell, prosecuting, said: 'The woman saw Adhemi cycling towards her and carried on walking after they passed.

'She turned round and saw that Adhami had dismounted his bike and exposed himself.

'Not thinking there would be a problem because he looked so young, she kept walking.
'But he chased after her, grabbed her and sexually assaulted her.'

Mother-of-two Mrs Maxted-Bluck, from Coventry, said: "I heard shouting and screaming but thought it was just kids but Jake ran off into the woods.

'I went to catch up with him and the next thing I knew this bloke is running towards me a terrified look on his face and Jake is about two feet behind him.

'When I caught up with the girl it was strange. It was like Jake knew what had happened.
'Despite being off his lead, he stood next to us watching out, as if he was guarding us.'

Police caught Adhami hours later and discovered he was in the county illegally after a failed asylum application.

The court heard that just weeks before the attack in the park, Adhami had been arrested by police after he groped a 13-year-old girl, but was released on bail.

He was jailed for four years when he was sentenced for both attacks on Friday.
Judge Hodson said: 'You had made unwanted approaches to a girl aged 13 in a public place.
'You went on to commit a very serious offence indeed. It was a bad sexual assault as one can imagine.'

Blodelle Thompson, defending, said: 'The defendant still does not acknowledge his guilt.
'If it was just the incident in the park, the court may have been minded to impose a community sentence, but the Hearsall Common one was a different category.'

Adhami was also placed on the sex offenders register or life, banned from having contact with girls under 16 and told he was likely to be deported upon his release from prison.

Rottweiler saves owner from deadly skin cancer - bbc online

Dog 'sniffs out' owner's cancer

Beamish the dog
Beamish sniffed out a melanoma on his owner's chest

A man from north Oxfordshire has credited his pet Rottweiler with sniffing out his skin cancer.

Chris Tuffrey, from Banbury, had a mole on his chest for 15 years but "put his head in the sand" and ignored it.

But he said thanks to his dog Beamish "nuzzling and licking" him and trying to lift his arm near the mole, he went to a doctor to get it checked out.

Within a two weeks, melanoma was confirmed by the hospital and the cancerous mole was removed.

Mr Tuffrey said when Beamish began nuzzling him he thought, "what's wrong with me".

When he visited his doctor in Deddington and was immediately referred to Oxford's Churchill Hospital.

Within a fortnight, melanoma was confirmed and the cancerous mole was removed.

I shall be grateful to him for the rest of my life
Chris Tuffrey

Mr Tuffrey's case is not unique. Scientists have found in trials, dogs have detected cancers in the urine of patients despite medical tests giving negative results.

Mr Tuffrey considers Beamish a very special friend.

''He's absolutely brilliant," he said.

"He's a very laid back dog, and I shall be grateful to him for the rest of my life.''

Pit Bulls: Response to Daniel Zeljkovic from Canada

THANK YOU all for your responses to PET+BLOGSPOT's Pit Bull Awareness Week which was launched last week.

It followed a powerful video in YouTube (Scroll Below To Watch) by some unflinching activists who are trying to separate truth from fiction about the real character of the breed.

I would especially like to thank SREBRENICA GENOCIDE Blog Editor Daniel Zeljkovic from Canada to our post: "PIT BULLS ARE ALSO VICTIMS IN DOG BITES":

The gentleman commented on Friday, February 29 at 02:56:00 PM 2008:

"The photo of a baby and a pit bull is not something I would support. You never know what could happen when you leave [a] pit bull to sleep with a baby, do you? It could bite the baby easily."

aNt's response:

Daniel, first did you watch the video? Because if you did, it would put to rest at once your reservations about pit bull terriers - and probably many other so-called "killer breeds" as the video did with me in my case.

I too once thought that pits were nasty and extremely ferocious creatures that were born to kill any living thing in its way.

Until, I pleasantly discovered recently, and more so with the amazing YouTube video, how terribly mistaken I was.

This is the same with bulls, I understand, in Spain where they are taught to charge at a waving cloth (the colour is immaterial). This is all for the cruel and greedy sport of bull-fighting.

Rottweiler's are also branded as devil dogs. I believed that once totally owing to the TV and movies where these dogs are portrayed.

My view change a 190 degrees, however when I started living with a Rottie for over 10 years. They are the most gentlest and long-suffering dogs that I have worked with as a service dog trainer in Malaysia in a wheelchair.

He could suddenly wake up and bite and kill me too, if going by your argument with babies. But his only "mistake" is that he always lavishes me with endless licks.

Back to pits, the fact that the breeds are used as service and therapy dogs surely must speak volumes about their capabilities and especially how some people try to deliberately spread disinformation against such animals.

Only this evening I caught an episode of the famous US TV show Smallville where two rogue canines, a Rottie and Golden Retriever were portrayed.

Although the TV series eventually put the blame on the laboratory that turned the dogs into killers through scientific guises, the Rottie was shown as the evil dog whilst the Golden was eventually rehabilitated.

Why not the other way around for a change? For people who don't have Rottweilers this may feed into their fears. However, for those of us who share our lives daily with them, it was completely ridiculous.

I was extremely disappointed by this portrayal as once again the powerful media had succeeded to give a totally distorted picture of the true character of a Rottie. This will only promulgate negative reactions to the breeds rather than positive ones.

The only point I will agree with you Daniel is that all dogs, no matter what breeds, need some form of supervision especially when they are with small children before one can fully leave them to care for infants.

Thank you for sharing your views Daniel.

I leave you with a statement Our Soceity issued on Pit Bulls sometime ago which was printed in our local English newspapers:

Wednesday, August 30 2006 NSTP Papers . Letter: Dogs are victims too -by Anthony Thanasayan, President, Petpositive -

Dear Editor, WE strongly regret the incident where a man was bitten in the leg by a pit bull terrier at a workshop in Kuala Lumpur.

Dog owners have an obligation to ensure that their pets pose no threat to the public.
They must be conscientious and stringent about where and how they keep their dogs.

Canines with a strong tendency to be protective of their masters should be managed with extra care, especially when people unfamiliar to the animals are around.
Overly aggressive dogs require therapy and training.

Contrary to some opinion, pit bull terriers should not be classified in any ‘banned breeds list’. They are not only regarded in many countries as wonderful family companions but some groups have even set up rescue and rehabilitation services for such dogs – with tremendous success.

Pit bulls, however, are not for everyone. They require owners who are intelligent, responsible, dedicated and understanding.

In every case of a dog attack, dogs are as much victims as the humans they turn on. Pit bulls are no exception.

The Government should review the ‘banned dogs list’ and remove pit bulls from the list.

As for the pit bull that bit the man, the Veterinary Services Department should try and rehabilitate the dog and only euthanise it when there is no other choice.

PIT BULLS ARE ALSO VICTIMS IN DOG BITES

OUR THEME this week is dedicated to the Pit Bull Terrier and all other so-called "Killer-dogs" in the world.

These include a whole string of them from Rottweilers to German Shepherds and more.

We hope that the incredibly challenging video that we're featuring this week at the top of the page will go a long way to raise awareness as to how Pit Bulls and most other dogs have unjustly been portrayed as killer dogs.

In fact, our first picture on the top left should already start dispelling many of the myths surrounding these wonderful creatures.

Pit Bulls are used in America as service and therapy dogs.

Not long ago there was a local incident of a "pit bull attacking a man".

However, when one of our veterinarians went to see the dog in the pound where it was "under arrest", so to speak, it turned out to be not a pit bull at all.

Just see how these wonderful creatures cuddle up to babes (picture 3). One cannot agree with the video more. It usually us who are to blame when the media go witch-hunting for these fine breeds.

Our desire to make things what they really are not fuels the press to rush to print stories when a pit bull, Doberman, Rottie or GSD is involved.

Finally my Rottie Vai who turned 13-years old on January 29 last month went for an Xray at Segar Animal Hospital in Cheras, yesterday.

Vai had only good news to receive from his doctor, Kathiravan Sethu from the Hartamas Veterinary Clinic when it was done. Vai is scheduled to go into the clinic in a fortnight from now for a follow up check-up.

Vai's picture is the last one to appear in this space. The picture which was taken a couple of hours ago shows the muscular dog trying to give me a smile.

Vai is arguably the first service dog in the country. I have retired him now of course owing to his old age. You could also call him an ambassador of sorts for all Rottweilers in the nation as the old boy was responsible to get the Shah Alam Municipality to change its mind over the blanket ban on Rottweilers. The decision against the breed followed an incident where a Rottie had badly bitten a young boy not very long ago.

A video of Vai helping me at home made the authorities go soft and revoke the ban.
