TOMORROW is MBPJ's Health Committee Meeting of which I am a member of. I will be raising the issue of eradicating rats in a humane way.
After doing some research with a couple of experts from the veterinary field, I learnt that:
1) If catching rats alive in a city council setting, it is best to terminate them with carbon dioxide gas in the local council. Rats that are caught by the public overnight must be surrendered to the council the next morning. Any later, will subject the rodents to starvation and other forms of cruelty.
2) Since catching rats is/may not be the most effective way to rid our society of rodents, using poison pellets (which is done by MBPJ) is the best or 'lesser evil' way.
This method will get more rats but at the same time, it must be cautioned that any other animal like cats or others eating the poisoned rats will also die.
What do you think about these suggestions? Do you agree or not? Care to share? Perhaps I can raise some of your ideas in tomorrow's meeting? Thanks!
