PJ councillor: Carbon dioxide a more humane way to kill rats
WHILE a rise in the rat population has triggered a widespread rodent control campaign in commercial areas, one Petaling Jaya City councillor has objected to the inhumane method of culling the rats.
Councillor and animal lover Anthony S. Thanasayan questioned the method of using poison pellets or leaving those caught in traps for hours out in the sun to die a slow death.
“I am against the methods used by the council to kill the rats. They are living creatures,” he said.
Thanasayan, the founder of Malaysian Animal-Assisted Therapy for the Disabled and Elderly Association or Petpositive, said he would write to the council’s Health and Environment Department director Dr Chitra Devi N. Vadivellu to convey his views.
“Using poison pellets is inhumane as the rat does not die instantly but writhes, struggles and becomes parched thus causing it to look for water. It is a cruel method to kill an animal,” he said.
“Culling the rats would not solve the problem but people must be educated not to dump leftovers into the drain and to use bins with lids to curb the rat population. It is the readily available food source that is causing the increase in rats,” he added.
When StarMetro asked Thanasayan what method he would suggest, he said using carbon dioxide to euthanise the rats would be a better option
