Wheelchair Protest At Police Station

Press conference in Brickfields
NEARLY TWO DOZEN animal activists made their way to the police station to express their outrage and condemnation over a picture that has been wildly and widely circulating on the Internet recently where two youths are seen showing their finger and holding a strangled pup by a string.

Cruel and defiant: Just a joke?
The young men are smiling over the camera in shameless defiance over their action - as if to say that the killing of the innocent puppy was a notable achievement in one of their latest exploits.

The protest took place at the Brickfields police station in Kuala Lumpur at 10.30 this morning.

The police report and the press conference held immediately after was put together by several nongovernmental organisations that champion animal rights and welfare in the country.

They are Roar, Maw, ILTC and Petpositive.

More than half a dozen of the protesters were persons in wheelchairs.

Speaking on behalf of Petpositive and the disabled group who were present, Anthony SB Thanasayan decried the act as a shocking and shameless act.

Shenaaz: Barbaric act
"What did the puppy do to deserve such cruelty?" he demanded. "A tiny and vulnerable pup like that could never have been a danger to anyone and it could have grown up and trained into a dog that could help the disabled or offer special companionship to the elderly.

Thanasayan is President of Petpositive, a national animal-assisted therapy society that uses pets as special friends for the handicapped and seniors.

"It's a most barbaric act," said Shenaaz Khan from Maw (Malaysian Animal Welfare). "The Department of Veterinary Services also deserves blame for being lackadaisical over animal cruelty issues resulting in monsters like this who can get away with murder realising that no one will come after them." She added.

Speaking for Roar, N Surendran described the incident as one of the worst in the country. He put the blame on the Government for not taking animal rights and welfare seriously.

Apart from the animal rights groups, there were also several lawyers who were animal lovers present.

Surihani's tweet
It is understood from one of the lawyers present that the picture first appeared on popular Malaysian actress Lisa Surihani's tweet. When the lawyer confronted Surihani on her tweet for details, the actress apparently refused to respond.

The protesters want the police to investigate on this case by questioning Surihani on relevant information in order to bring the culprits to justice.

The media who turned up at the press conference included The Star, The New Straits Times Press and Sinar.

Bernama TV also showed up and conducted an interview at the site.

Please write in and tell us what you think about the whole issue.

We have already received numerous reactions on our mobile and in Facebook.

Here are some of them:

"I came across your Blog through the Malaysiakini portal and was very upset watching the youths with the hanged puppy next to them.

I am an animal lover and have saved the lives of lots of dogs and cats. What can I do to protect animal rights in the country?"

> Zaid.

"I feel like hanging the youths just to see how they feel!"

> Grace Tan.

"They should be charged appropriately..and if I had it my way hung by their testicles!"

> Captain Isyak Ghani.

"Words cannot express how I feel just looking at the photograph. My hubby and kids are equally upset. These 2 youths will suffer for what they have done. Let God deal with them..it is an innocent life that they have taken and no one has a right to do so. Whoever who recognise these 2 should shun them for the shameful thing that they have done."

> Wendy Goh.

"What kind of a sick society are we becoming into?"

> Inderjeet Kaur

"Cruel!!!"

> Puvaneswari Narayanasamy

"I'm at a lost for words!"

> Maggie Mala Krish Muru

"Oh God...when who and where, why??"

> Daniya Subramaniam

I cannot imagine what this Lisa Surihani woman is trying to do. What kind of people is she looking to attract by posting a photo of such a hideous act. If she was trying to highlight it as an act of extreme animal cruelty, then she would have immediately been willing to co-operate when the lawyer asked for details. Instead, by refusing to respond, she gives me the impression that she wants to protect those two sadists and, that maybe she, herself, supports extreme cruelty to animals.

Your organisation should be commended for acting on this matter with full intent to see it through. I hope the media give it as much space and importance as it can. We need to send a very strong message to sadists and their supporters: that there will be consequences.

What UGLY little pieces of TRASH . They NEED the death penalty....this is a MURDER by defintion!!!! If they can do this with no problems to a tiny loving puppy then what in GOD'S name makes you think they won't do this to a human being??!!??!? And that female Surihani NEEDS to be charged as well!!!! immediately!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sad. But not uncommon. Animals being treated thus only reveals what is lying latent within all of us, waiting, for the right time to leap into similarly horrible action. Check out the comments. Notice Capt Isyak's "testicle" way? Grace Tan's "hanging" feeling? And we haven't even confirmed whether the disgusting pic is genuine, or a photoshop-job, aimed at annoying Anthony T!
I like Daniya's last word - "why?" We would make some headway in the right direction if we would devote serious thought to the "why" of this pic. I'll bet it will point in the same direction as WHY strangers can actually bring themselves to snatch away the lifeless body from their loved ones, elderly men can entertain thoughts of making out with their own daughters etc.
A great soul once said, "It is the heart that is wicked, that gives birth to ALL that is evil". And they hung him up on nails!

Thanks for your comments Suraiya.

Petpositive shares your anger. But we in all fairness need to hear Lisa's explanation of why she put the picture out in her Blog.

Apparently The Malay Mail will be carrying her side of the story tomorrow.

Let's wait and see.

Anonymous, you are right by calling the puppy killing "murder".

Animals are here on this planet for us to defend; not be cruel to them just to hurt them and have a cheap thrill.

Sam, the reason why the animal groups went out to make a police report is exactly to verify the authenticity of the picture.

The Great Soul that you refer to who was hung on the cross also was quick to speak out against injustice and even used the whip to chase out the moneychangers in the temple.

Let us pray for justice to be done to the perpetrators.

It goes to prove what must be expected from this society ? Anything else or more is only a Ketunan

Anthony, it is a blessing to have you and the animal lovers around to speak for those poor animals. I want to throw up when I saw the 2 imbeciles smiling at their misdeed. What an example to set for the youth of today. Please fight for a change in the law for animal abuse and throw these two into jail.

I looked at The Malay Mail online to see what this Lisa Surihani had to say about this shocking incident. I didn't find anything. Did I somehow miss it?

Hi. I was one of the people who came to the Brickfields police station on the morning the police report was filed, in order to support the press conference and add to the numbers of animal lovers outraged at this horrendous crime. Could you please let me know what is the latest with respect to this case?

Also, was the Malay Mail story from Lisa Surihani's perspective published? Does anyone have a copy? Many thanks!

Dear Eugene Lee,

Thanks for writing. Also thanks for taking some of the great shots at the press conference that day.

There has been no update since our police report. The issue is still being investigated.

Some sources, however, suggest that the picture - and incident - may have an overseas origin.

We are not able to confirm this.

An follow up article on the issue was apparently published by the Malay Mail.

However, we in PETPOSITIVE - for one - have no knowledge of it. Should you come across it, we would most appreciate if you could share it with us.

Should we get any updates on the issue at anytime, we will highlight it in this Blog.

Thank you once again for all your help.

Dear Anthony,

You are most welcome! I thank you also for responding to my queries. Yes, I had also read in some of the comments that the picture could have been taken in another country. Has there been any update on the investigations into why the photo was on Lisa Surihani's Twitter account and her role (if any) in the issue?

Thank you and I will continue to monitor your blog for any updates. Thank you for all the great work you do for animals!

Dear Eugene Lee,

It was good to hear from you again.

Good news, we managed to find the Malay Mail article with Lisa Surihani's comments in it.

She says she put in the picture because she wanted to highlight the issue to the public.

We will reprint the article in PET+BLOGSPOT for you this week.

We look forward to your continued support.
