RAWANG: Enraged animal lovers, along with the police, bore down on a man who hit his dog with a hoe and threw a brick at the animal at his home in Taman Garing Permai here, leaving the animal with open wounds on its head.

Members of the Malaysia Independent Animal Rescue (MIAR) spent over an hour trying to stop the man from hitting his dog, Jacky.

The dog bled and fell into a drain, unable to move, in the incident yesterday. The group then rushed the dog to a veterinarian.

MIAR president T. Puspa Rani said it vomited “blood and a long piece of rope”.
“The vet who treated Jacky said it had a lung condition and was constantly in pain. This gave Jacky a temperament issue.

“A report will be lodged with the Department of Veterinary Services,” she said, adding that Jacky was now in the good hands of MIAR, which is nursing it back to health.

It is believed the dog had been tied up all day and night at the backyard with no shade and was fed just water.

A concerned citizen lodged a police report, alleging the owner had started the attack by throwing a brick at Jacky, causing the dog to howl and its leg badly injured.

Rescuers showed up at the house, along with the Rawang police, after MIAR sent a call of help to all their Facebook followers, imploring anyone nearby to hurry over to the house to help the dog.
Lorry driver Krishnan Ramlo, 45, claimed he had beaten the dog because “it had gone mad” and bitten his hand.

“This is the second time that Jacky has bitten me. The first time was in April, when Jacky punctured my leg with 11 holes.

“I had to take medical leave,” said Krishnan, claiming that he loved the dog and provided well for it.
His nephew Pierabu Kaliapan, 23, an operator, said he held his uncle back during the brutal beatings on the dog.

Meanwhile, the Animal Welfare Bill is expected to be gazetted later this year, with an amendment to the current Animal Act to mete harsher punishment to those cruel to animals.

The provisions include a fine of between RM20,000 and RM100,000 and a jail term of up to three years.
