Maybank In Mid Valley Inaccessible To Disabled Patrons

Story in NST today

KUALA LUMPUR: Petaling Jaya City Council councillor T. Anthony, who is wheelchair bound, said his recent trip to a bank at Mid Valley Megamall was unpleasant.

When he reached the bank he realised that there were no ramps for wheelchair users and as such he had to get his friend to lift his wheelchair into the building.

He also said that there was no special counter for the disabled or the elderly.

Anthony said banks, in general, should allow the disabled to complete their transactions fast so that parking bays are not held up for too long.

He also said that special toilets for the disabled should also be built.

"If the banks cannot provide toilets for the disabled they should allow the disabled to leave the building fast upon completing their transactions," said Anthony.

He was also caught by surprise when the electronic finger print sensor was far from his reach.

"The bank personnel had to pull the finger print sensor to my level and it looked as if it was about to snap."

He said the following day he was contacted by the bank manager who was apologetic over the situation.

"She said the problems will be channeled to the headquarters for further action.

"It is not about me not being able to do a transaction in comfort but it is also about other disabled people, too.

"Others will shy away from lodging a complaint but I think it is my responsibility to speak for other disabled people based on my experience," said Anthony.
