74-year Old Man Mauled To Death By Dog In Subang Jaya

The source of the news was from the Subang Jaya Echo.

Upon closer scrtunity of the picture of the animal - and after checking it with a dog trainer, the dog now looks as if it is a bull terrier.

Whatever the case, what was such a "dangerous dog" doing out in the neighbourhood without a leash anyway?

PETPOSITIVE has always argued that in dog maulings, disabled, the elderly and children are often the victims.

But it is too early to comment now. I will wait until the news breaks out to everyone tomorrow, to see if it warrants a statement from Petpositive.

But for now I can tell you for sure that it was the Subang Jaya local council that called in the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS).

The comments given by the DVS over the case to the SJ Echo was mostly responsible, I'm happy to say.

However, it is very interesting to see where this is all going to from here.

Here is the SJ Echo report:

Dog Mauls Man to Death in Subang Jaya

by SJ Echo
SUBANG JAYA, MAY 8 2012: WHEN SEVENTY four year SS19 resident Yip Sun Wah left his home for his morning walk, little did he realise it would be his last time.

Just two roads away from home, Yip was attacked by a crossed bred pit bull terrier and died on the street, after succumbing to his injuries.

He had multiple wounds on his neck and back while part of his ear was ripped off by the dog in the attack.

Passersby and neighbours who tried to break off the attack failed and the dog continued attacking Yip till he fell in a pool of blood.

At  the scene, family members were still shocked by what happened. Even Yip's wife, Lim Yoke Kim, 73, was overcome with grief. When she arrived, Yip was already dead.

"My son called me and told me what happened and I rushed to the scene but my husband was already dead," she said.

Subang Jaya OCPD ACP Yahaya Ramli who was at the scene said the victim was out for his walk at 9.50am when he was attacked by the dog in the neighbourhood.

"He walks daily and we believe that the dog attacked him from eyewitnesses. The victim fell but the dog did not stop attacking him"

"A neighbour used a cane to help scare off the dog and it finally released the victim. The victim succumbed to his injuries at the scene," he said.

Yahaya said the incident lasted just a short while but because the victim was small-sized he could not ward off the attack.

"We are investigating the case under Section 304A of the Penal Code (causing death by negligence). We believe the dog may have escaped from the house compound," he added.
The offence under Section 304 (a) Penal Code carries a jail term of up to 30 years and a fine, on conviction.

Selangor Veterinary Services deputy dirrector Dr Fadzilah A'ini Abd Kadir @ Raden who rushed to the scene said the dog would be confiscated and DNA tests would be conducted to confirm that it was the canine which attacked the victim.

"It will take a week for the DNA tests to come to us. The dog will also be monitored over 2 weeks in our care."

"The dog is below 3 years of age and was bought by the owner from a breeder. It is registered under a restricted license and the breed of the dog is meant for hunting," she said.

She said the dog did not have its license tag on it.

"These breeds have to be monitored by the owner all the time. They must never be allowed to roam freely outside the house compound. Even if you walk the dog it has to be on a leash and muzzled."

"Dog owners have to be very careful when handling such breeds. Any animal can attack but this cross breed is meant for hunting which explains its aggressive behaviour," she added.
