MBPJ On Track With Its Universal Design Projects

DATELINE MAJLIS BANDARAYA PETALING JAYA (MBPJ), HEADQUARTERS:

THE PETALING JAYA CITY COUNCIL is right on track with its plans to include all its upgrading plans in the city with universal designs.

This commitment was reassured to several disabled leaders when they met with MBPJ's Deputy Mayor Puasa Md Taib (right) here yesterday in his office.

Francis Siva, president of the Independent Living and Training Centre in Rawang, Selangor, Yam Tong Woo and Anthony SB Thanasayan from the Malaysian Animal-Assisted Therapy for the Disabled and the Elderly Association or PETPOSITIVE were told this in a brief meeting that took place at approximately 2.30pm.

They had expressed concern over a long stretch of pavement from SS2 until almost the Islamic University that is currently undergoing renovation work.

Thanasayan who is President of Petpositive as well as MBPJ councillor had expressed his worry at MBPJ's Full Board Meeting last week that he feared that the upgrading work will not include universal design facilities that would benefit all residents.

Universal designs allow all persons to use pavements with ease and safely. Street furniture are moved to the side so as to not pose as a barrier to pedestrians.

People in wheelchairs, the blind, little people, pregnant mothers and parents with prams as well as the able-bodied will all be able to use universally designed pavements.

The deputy mayor even went to the point of ringing up the engineering department in the presence of the disabled activists to confirm that the special design will be incorporated.

It was also decided that Thanasayan will be invited to monitor the progress of the universal design pavement at the various stages of its progress.
