Meeting To Clarify Banned Dog Breeds In Putrajaya

DATELINE DEPARTMENT OF VETERINARY SERVICES HEADQUARTERS, PUTRAJAYA:

ANIMAL WELFARE AND RIGHTS GROUPS will be attending a special press conference here this afternoon which has been called by the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS).

The event which is scheduled to take place within the hour is expected to clarify a report in The Star last week that have made many animal lovers upset and concerned.

The Star said the Department of Veterinary Services in Selangor and the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) have decided to ban seven breeds of dogs in the municipality.

Their objective is to crack down on puppy mill productions in the area.

The DVS' and SJMC's decision drew flak from animal welfare groups - including PETPOSITIVE - accusing both entities of barking up a wrong tree.

"What has banning of seven breeds got to do with stopping of puppy mills?" said a flabbergasted animal lover to PET+BLOGSPOT.

"It is Rottweilers, GSDs, Dobermans to Shih Tzus, Poodles and other popular breeds that become victims of puppy mills, not Akitas and the whole list of ridiculous breeds on the DVS' lists!" he pointed out.

"Why are the DVS and MPSJ targeting dogs and going on a witch hunt instead of zeroing in on their owners who are the culprits?," asked a member of Petpositive.

Whilst it is not known what exactly will transpire at today's press conference, PET+BLOGSPOT has learnt that the event was called by the Director-General of the DVS Datuk Dr Aziz Jamalludin.

He is expected to clarify these and other issues related to dog care and management.

PET+BLOGSPOT has learnt that apart from Petpositive, invitations have also gone out to SPCA Selangor, PAWS Animal Welfare Society and the Malaysian National Animal Welfare Foundation group.

Petpositive, on its part, will be calling for a total scrap of the banned list of dogs and for the setting up for educational programmes on responsible pet ownership conducted by all local councils through the close cooperation of the DVS and animal welfare NGOs.
