Special Animal Welfare Council By This Year

A NEW BODY to look into the rights of animal welfare will be set up before the end of the year.


Called the Animal Welfare Advisory Council, the organisation run by the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) will be established at a ministerial level.

Its members will include animal NGOs as well as all the other relevant organisations from the government.

Dr Aziz: Council top priority
The council will be tasked to look into all matters related to animal welfare and rights, from domestic pets to livestock and food products, animal experimentation as well as wildlife," said Datuk Dr Abdul Aziz Jamalludin, Director-General of the DVS earlier this morning.

"One of the main tasks of the special team is also to look into the effective setting up of an animal welfare act which Malaysia has yet to come up with." Added the DVS head.

Dr Aziz made this announcement at a special animal welfare dialogue with about 30 people representing NGOs as well as government agencies in the Ministry of Agriculture building today. 
 
The DVS needs to gets approval from the Minister of Agriculture Datuk Seri Noh bin Omar before the council can be established.

"The setting up of the council is a top priority. I'm trying my best to do it by this month or the beginning of next month so that we can have our first meeting as quickly as possible," said Dr Aziz.
