Ipoh City Council To Meet Owner Of Therapy Dog Spunk

Ipoh bans shooting of strays

IPOH: The Ipoh City Council has banned the shooting of stray animals with immediate effect.
Council secretary Datuk Abdul Rahim Md Ariff conveyed this decision to a group of animal activists who met him yesterday to hand over a memorandum calling for the ban.

This followed the shooting of Spunk, a 10-year-old dog who was left unattended by its owner here on Oct 29.
Fighting for animal rights: Anthony handing over the memorandum on behalf of the other NGOs to Abdul Rahim during a meeting Tuesday. With them are Dr Ranjit (right) and ISPCA adviser Dr Goh Hue Lang (third from right).

The killing of the therapy dog drew flak from animal lovers and NGOs.

T. Anthony Siva Balan, president of the animal-friendly group Petpositive, said the council had agreed to stop shooting strays and instead use other methods to deal with them.

He said the council would send its officers to Petaling Jaya next week to learn dog-catching methods used by the city council there.

Anthony, a PJ city councillor, said Ipoh was also studying ways to set up an animal pound to keep animals caught in the streets.

He added the Ipoh council would also work with NGOs in dealing with strays.

“A committee set up by the council will discuss methods such as neutering and spaying the animals,” said Anthony, adding that the Ipoh mayor or his representative would visit the 75-year-old owner of Spunk to apologise for the shooting.

Noah’s Ark Ipoh founder and treasurer Dr Ranjit Kaur Mendhir said she was delighted that things had worked out well after the meeting with the council secretary.

Kudos to the Ipoh City Council for their decision to ban the shooting of strays, but are they going to take any action against those who shot those that weren't strays? (Petpositive Empowerment on Facebook)

Hi Laurie, my personal response is no amount of apology will ever bring back the canine heroes that died through the horrible acts of the Ipoh City Council.

We will just have to allow time for healing to take place - as well as for the Council.

Datuk Rahim, council secretary, said that none of them ever wanted to kill the dogs but they had to do something to control the stray population.

The fact that they admitted this and their mistakes and are now making amends, is good enough reason for us to move forward.

Is sorry good enough ?????
Not to me !!!
I am still grieving over the natural death of Max,my soul-mate Bichon Frise.
How about the heartache & sorrow the owners still have to suffer & be hounded for the rest of their life?
Go get a life !!!

When I mentioned this incident to a friend (20yo) from Ipoh, he recounted his teenage days where a stray dog was chased into his secondary school and shot dead near the stairs, some students were coming down the stairs and were traumatized by the incident... some of his friends are still traumatized til...l this day, they were lucky no student was caught in the cross fire... Today, we celebrate that Ipoh has banned dog shooting all togetheer. Well Done Ipoh!

Great news about Ipoh. Congrats. However, here's a story so similar to that of Spunk (except there was no ruthless shooting involved). Suraiya

"Afghan hero dog put down by mistake
Updated 3 hours 0 minutes ago"

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/11/18/3069896.htm

A dog credited with saving her owner's life in Afghanistan, by barking at a suicide bomber, has been put down by mistake in Arizona after straying and ending up in a pound.
Target, a two-year-old shepherd mix, had appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show and won American hearts with her tale after being brought back from Afghanistan by owner Sergeant Terry Young, who was distraught at her untimely end.Sergeant Young found and adopted his four-legged friend at his Afghan base."I just can't believe that something like this would happen to such a good dog," he said."Even while she was alive, they've been asking me 'what does this dog mean to you?' And really, all I can say is 'everything'. There are no words to describe it." Back in February, Target and two others dogs, Rufus and Sasha, barked when a suicide bomber came to Sergeant Young's Dand Patan base, near Afghanistan's border with Pakistan.Sasha, who reportedly bit the bomber, was killed when the man detonated himself outside the camp.
But the other two canine heroes survived and were feted like human heroes on their return to America.
Spotted in the San Tan Valley area of south-east Phoenix, Arizona on Friday and mistaken for a stray, Target was picked up by the Pinal County Animal Care centre and taken to the pound.

She was not scheduled to be put down, but an animal care centre employee mistakenly took Target out of her pen on Monday and euthanised her.
The employee has since been placed on administrative leave for failing to follow the correct procedures.
"I am heartsick over this," the director of the facility, Ruth Stalter, said in a statement.
"I had to personally deliver the news to the dog's owner and he and his family are understandably distraught."
The centre has promised to investigate the incident thoroughly.
