Department of Veterinary Services Issues Immediate Investigation On Therapy Dog Killing

DVS Head: Immediate Investigation
News Just In: MP for Ipoh Barat M Kulasegaran will be visiting the late Spunk's elderly owner tomorrow. We are glad that she has agreed to meet the Yang Berhormat despite the trauma she suffered when MBI dogcatchers murdered her therapy dog.
DATELINE: PETPOSITIVE THERAPY CENTRE, PETALING JAYA:

The Department of Veterinary Services has launched an immediate investigation into the incident in Taman Merdeka, Ipoh, where the city council had shot and killed a therapy dog that belonged to a 75-year old woman who was receiving therapy from the animal.

This was conveyed to PETPOSITIVE President Anthony SB Thanasayan by the Department's Director-General Datuk Dr Abdul Aziz Jamaluddin via a Short Messaging Services.

Meanwhile, the news of the therapy dog killing was also picked up by LiteFM radio station.

The broadcaster conducted an interview this afternoon with Thanasayan on PETPOSITIVE'S reaction to the utterly senseless killing.

It is not known by us if the clip was aired on LiteFM. Feedback from readers who might have heard it will be helpful.

It is learnt that the radio station rang up the Ipoh City Council (MBI) for comments. However, the broadcaster's request was turned down.

The MBI reportedly told LiteFM that they would be issuing their own statement on the matter very soon.

PETPOSITIVE applauds LiteFM for taking interest in the issue and hopes other radio stations in the country will also follow in their fine example in highlighting animal cruelty issues in Malaysia.

MPK CAT Training
Efforts are also being made to meet up with the MBI in Ipoh by our President who is also Chairman of the Petaling Jaya City Council's (MBPJ) and the Klang Municipal Council (MPK)'s Canine Advisory Team or CAT.

The meeting which is being arranged by the Ipoh SPCA will push for an immediate end to dog-shooting as well as the setting up of a CAT committee in the MBI.

We sincerely hope that the MBI will welcome us and our initiatives.

Finally, the Member of Parliament for Ipoh Barat M Kulasegaran, which Taman Merdeka falls under, will be organising a visit to the elderly lady whose dog fell victim to the MBI.

We can only hope that our member who has been greatly traumatised by the loss of her pet, will be willing to meet the Yang Berhormat and his officials.
Please stay tuned; we hope to have updates on the latest developments.

THE STAR: Stop senseless killing

PETPOSITIVE is saddened, shocked and outraged over an incident on Oct 29 where the Ipoh City Council (MBI) shot and killed a therapy dog belonging to an elderly woman in Taman Merdeka in Ipoh.

The woman, aged 75, is a member of our society. She had been receiving animal-assisted therapy for over 10 years since her husband passed away, leaving her to live by herself in her home.

Her special companion named Spunk which she raised as a pup was everything to her. That fateful day, however, that beautiful relationship came to a needless and cruel end.

Spunk was just about to be taken for his morning walk when his owner remembered that she had forgotten to take tissues along to pick up his poo in order to dispose of it responsibly.

She briefly disappeared into the house for the tissues and Spunk was gone in a flash.

He must have spotted the MBI dogcatchers and panicked. He ran out of the house only to be hunted and gunned down mercilessly.

There was not a single day when Spunk did not wear his collar and a valid dog licence.

Does the council know what it feels like for an elderly person to return to her home without her best friend to look after and protect her at night?

Why can’t other councils emulate the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) and the Klang Municipal Council (MPK) , both of which have given up the outdated and cruel practice of shooting dogs years ago and come up with more humane and effective methods in canine control?

Our councils should be moving forward by developing new and positive methods in animal care and management.

PetPositive calls for an immediate ban on dog shooting everywhere and for the setting up of canine committees in all local councils – in the steps of MBPJ and MPK – with participation by relevant NGOs.

President, PetPositive.

LETTER 2:

Time to abolish dog-shooting rules

MALAY MAIL: Outdated and inhumane local council policy robs owners of loyal friends instead of curbing the stray population

PETPOSITIVE is saddened, shocked and outraged by last Saturday's incident where the Ipoh City Council shot and killed a therapy dog belonging to an elderly woman at Taman Merdeka, Ipoh, Perak.

The 75-year-old woman is a member of our society and has been receiving animal-assisted therapy for over 10 years since her husband passed away, leaving her to live all by herself.

Her special companion, named Spunk which she raised as a pup, was everything to her. He was the joy of her life. He would make her laugh when she was depressed and come up to nudge her lovingly whenever she felt lonely.

Spunk was lovely to talk to because he always listened. True to his name, the companion canine was determined to make his mistress feel happy and fulfilled all the time. He would jump on his toes at once whenever there were strangers at her door. Spunk was her best reason to exercise every morning and evening during their regular walks.

Last Saturday, however, the beautiful relationship the two enjoyed over the years came to a needless and cruel end. Spunk was just about to be taken for his morning walk when his owner remembered she forgot to take tissues along to pick up dog poo in order to dispose of them responsibly.

Our elderly member briefly disappeared into the house for the tissues and Spunk was gone in a flash.
Spunk had spotted the City Council dogcatchers and panicked. He ran out of the house only to be hunted and gunned down mercilessly by the council personnel.

This, despite the fact not a single day has gone by over the years where Spunk has been faithfully wearing a collar and the latest dog licence.

What is our society turning into when vulnerable people like our elderly member obviously have no place in the heart of the local council?

Why do we still have to shoot dogs when other councils, such as the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) and Klang Municipal Council (MPK), among others, have given up the outdated and cruel practice years ago to come up with more humane and effective methods in canine control?

Is it an excuse for us to cover up our own ineptitude or lack of obvious know-how in the best way to approach the stray dog problem in our environment?

What if human beings are shot by mistake when dogs are being hunted in public? This is not at all an uncommon occurrence as the elderly and children have become victims in the past.

Our councils should be moving forward by developing new and positive methods in animal care and management.

Does the Ipoh City Council realise, by their action, what it feels like as an elderly person to return home without a best friend to look after and protect her at night?

As such, PETPOSITIVE calls for an immediate ban of all dogshooting exercises everywhere.

We also call for the setting up of canine committees in local councils, just like MBPJ and MPK, together with the participation of animal non-governmental organisations. This is the only best way to deal with the canine "problem".

Comments

Why? Spunk does not bite them. What is the use of having a collar and license. You don't just go around shooting things. What they can do is catch+check+warn owner or something first before doing anything..and not just shoot any dogs they see. For all you know, dogs have a more noble life than those shooters. If they ever do that to my dog-and mind you, he lives in my compound, never off leash (fraid they do like what they did to Johny the dog), I will shoot them myself. And oh, shoot their cats as well.
