Animal Group Clash Over Dogs With Local Council

PETPOSITIVE BREAKING NEWS!

NEWS JUST IN:

A press conference is scheduled for tomorrow (Sunday) in Klang by the Member of Parliament for the area Charles Santiago.

Several dogcatchers from the Klang local council (MPK) are alleged to have threatened a domestic maid whilst walking her pet. It is not clear if she was walking one dog or two.

Reports claim that the canines were also abused.

Meanwhile, allegations were also made that an animal group had tried to stop the MPK's dogcatchers from carrying out their duty.

It was reported that their vehicle was stopped by the group who demanded that the dogs in the van - and later at the pound - be released at once.

Police reports were apparently made from both sides.

MPK Director of Health Zulkifli Abbas has promised a thorough investigation into the matter.

MPK is the second local council - after the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) - to set up a special committee on canines in the nation called the Canine Advisory Team or CAT.

There have been groundbreaking changes with respects to animal rights and welfare since CAT was formed.

CAT's Chairman on both councils is Anthony SB Thanasayan who is also the President of Petpositive.

Petpositive views the two incidents very seriously and is waiting for the outcome of the latest developments.

Dear Petpositive,

I have, of late, been reading a lot of articles in the news and in NGO websites on animal cruelty issues here in Malaysia. I was very happy to see that there are so many organizations like SPCA, Petpositive and others operating actively against many animal related issues in our country.

Petpositive's role in trying to control strays in Selangor by forming the CAT is commendable, looking at what happened in the past with municipalities and their contractors dog catching teams. As clearly reported, the CAT was formed to address this issue of changing certain methods of animal control and I hope that through time, they will succeed. Go CAT!

I also discovered something very strange while going through another NGO website run by Malaysiandogsdeservebetter

Are they a valid NGO? There's only a blog site but no website. And there's lots of cursing going around. Is it a business?

The site asks for sponsorship and donations through cheques in favour of Community Development and Integration Initiative Bhd (654290-T)

They also provide bank info details.

Where is MDDB's TAX EXEMPTION NUMBER? And why is it BHD? I'll ask a company secretary on Monday to find out.

Anyway, continue your good work Petposive, SPCA, PAWS and CAT.

All the best!

Eddie

Thank you for your comments Eddie.

I have to agree with you that the situation with the local councils and dogs is much better now than it has ever been in the past after the formation of CAT.

Dialogue is always the best way to get people to change their minds and hearts.

The moment we can get them to enter into such a situation, half of the battle is already won.

The most frustrating part is the endure the slow pace that working with any government entails.

I guess it will take a special kind of people who will endure this time of advocating and championing.

Regarding the organisation you mention, I'm sorry but we will just have to reserve our comments on that one.

Please be informed that Petpositive is a fully registered national organisation that is non profit.

Contributions to us are tax deductible.

All the best and thank you for writing again.
