Animal Lover and Animals Attacked By Humans - NST

JOHOR BARU: Stray dogs and cats have a hard time but some people want to make it worse, even after the animals have been adopted by a shelter.

On Saturday, five men armed with sticks allegedly attacked several cats and dogs at the Johor Baru Humane Touch Animal Welfare Society in Taman Delima here at 10pm.

The founder of the shelter, 48-year-old Josphine Mary Dass Paul, was also threatened and roughed up when she tried to intervene.

The drama unfolded when Josphine Mary arrived at the centre and began unloading some food from her car. At that time, some of the animals ran out of the shelter to greet her.

She claimed she saw her neighbour, armed with an iron rod, in front of his gate.

"I told him to give me some time to get the animals back into the shelter but he started to hurl abuses at me. After that, four other men rushed out, all armed with sticks, and started beating my dogs.
"When I tried to intervene, I was pushed to the ground. One threatened to set my car on fire while another threw a dustbin at me."

Josphine Mary said this was not the first time she had a confrontation with her neighbours, claiming that several of her dogs and cats had been poisoned.

Josphine Mary, who has lodged a police report, hopes animal lovers would help her out as her existing shelter is overcrowded.
