CAT BRIEFING TODAY - LOCAL COUNCILS TACKLE IRRESPONSIBLE PET OWNERSHIP

PETPOSITIVE NEWSFLASH!

A special press conference is being held now in Petaling Jaya, Selangor as you read this.

At 12.30pm today the media will be gathering at the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) headquarters in Jalan Yong Shook Lin to get a press briefing on responsible pet ownership (RPO) by Selangor state executive councillor Dr A Xavier Jayakumar.

Dr Xavier who also serves as chairman of the state's Health department will be advising dog and cat owners to take special attention on their pets before the Chinese New Year holidays come around.

Long holiday occasions are the time when some of the worst cases of neglect occur. Pets are left homeless, abandoned without food and injured say animal welfare experts.

Festivities are also a common time when the abandoned pets become a nuisance to neighbours who don't have pets.

Dogs, in particular, who run out of their houses with poorly built fences end up making a mess for neighbours with their indiscriminate droppings and overturning of rubbish bins.

To highlight these issues, Dr Xavier will be joined by officers from the vector unit of the local councils of Selangor to warn pet owners that abandoning their animals will result in strong compounds and quick action against them.

Non governmental organisations like PETPOSITIVE, Save A Stray and PAWS will also be talking to the press about how dog and cat owners can and ought to take care of their pets.

They will be joined by the Department of Veterinary Services who will speak on the healthcare of animals.

The press conference is organised by MBPJ's Canine Advisory Team or CAT of which PETPOSITIVE among other animal NGOs is a member. The event is held as a preventive measure of the local councils to tackle the problem of irresponsible pet ownership.

MBPJ CAT and MPK CAT are the only local councils in the country to have a special committee to tackle dog and cat issues.
