Saturday August 9, 2008

Four lauded for their services

FOUR outstanding Malaysians were recognised for their efforts and contributions to society with one-of-a-kind HTC Touch phones designed by local designer Datuk Dayang Fatimah Tom Abang Saufi under the Touching Hearts, Painting Futures initiative.

The recipients were MCA Public Services and Complaints Depart-ment head Datuk Michael Chong, Yayasan Budi Penyayang chief executive officer Datuk Leela Mohd Ali, Women’s Aid Organisation executive director Ivy Josiah and Malaysian Animal-Assisted Therapy for the Disabled and Elderly Association (Petposi-tive) president Anthony Thana-sayan.

Each received four limited edition batik phones in Soft Black, Synergy Sage, Radiant Burgundy and Pure White, which reflects Tom Abang Saufi’s batik prints.

The phones were presented by HTC Malaysia country manager SK Wong who said the four were chosen from more than 100 names.

“We hope that through this initiative, more Malaysians will follow in the footsteps of these individuals.

“We are pleased to have Tom Abang Saufi on board and hope that batik will be pushed further as more people around the world come to appreciate the beauty of our heritage,” Wong said.

Designer Tom Abang Saufi was glad to have the opportunity to use art and beauty to highlight the issues represented by the selected individuals.

“As a designer, I am very honoured to have done this and I admire these people for the issues they champion,” she said.

She added that it took about a month to work on the designs.

Chong was pleased to be among the four and said he had been even more excited by Tom Abang Saufi’s participation as he had always been proud of her work.

As for Ivy, she said: “It is an honour to be sharing this appreciation with people whom I have always admired.

“However, all of our issues are still significant and need great attention,” she said.

In Anthony’s case, the appreciation was a nice gesture for someone from the disabled community. “People with disabilities are rarely recognised and I hope more people are also given the same recognition,” he said.
