Unusual Disability Symposium In March

CONGRATULATIONS are in order to PETPOSITIVE'S adviser Dr Nazirah Hasnan (picture, third from top) for her 'live' appearance on television yesterday.

The rehabilitation specialist from University Malaya Medical Centre in Kuala Lumpur was
interviewed on TV3's Malaysia Hari Ini (Malaysia Today) programme about an upcoming disability symposium to be held in KL next month.

Titled "Sexuality and Fertility", the event is targeted at spinal injured patients.

The UMMC physiatrist will be one of the noted speakers at the symposium.

The half-day occasion starts at 10am on Saturday, March 1 and will conclude at 4.30pm. It will take place in Cheras.

The symposium will also include Mr Shivjeet Singh Raghaw (Second from top) as an international speaker from India.

Mr Singh is Peer Counselor from the Department of Rehabilitation at the Indian Spinal Injuries Centre which is based in New Delhi.

A wheelchair-user himself, Singh is motivated by what he defines as "a holistic psycho-social rehabilitation approach" towards disability living.

Singh took up peer counseling as a hobby after he was permanently paralysed in 1980. He sustained severe injuries to his spine as a result of being physically attacked by strangers in public.

The disability event in Malaysia is being organised by Chong Tuck Meng (top) who is adviser to a KL-based spinal injured NGO called "Perwira K9."

Dr Nazirah who also serves as adviser to the organisation was joined by Chong on TV3 to present some details about the upcoming disability event.

"My mobile never stopped ringing after the intervew," Chong, a tetraplegic, told PET+BLOGSPOT after the interview.

PETPOSITIVE is one of many NGOs that have been specially invited to the symposium.

For more details on how you too can participate, please contact Chong at: 016 222 5722.
