Disability Need Not Mean The End Of The World

THIS was one of the first poor family I visited in Desa Mentari when I joined the Petaling Jaya City Council.

This gentleman was struck with a disease that made it unable for him to walk.

The MBPJ team and I sought him out in his poor flat and made sure that he was receiving the right kind of help from the social office as well as from the hospital - also to help him get a wheelchair.

I had trouble getting my own wheelchair into his home.

It was a culture shock for me to see people in PJ living in such poor conditions and an affluent society judge these people as say "they like to be poor."

Disability is not the end of the world. With the right kind of support, anyone affected by it can have a very fulfilling life. Our city and nation must move towards this.
