Here's
a shocking story of how a re homed stray bulldog mauls and kills a
child. It raises the question of how re homing is done as per criteria.
It also raises question of supervision of children with pets and
seriously questions breed specific laws.
- Vivian V. Kulasingham, Daniel Martin Sebastian, Lillian Gonzales Brown and 2 others like this.
- John S. Thomas It does looks like that dangerous breed which is unpredictable. Sometimes dogs do get jealous. Sad.
- Anthony Siva Balan Thanasayan Hi John S. Thomas, I strongly believe that problems not with any breed - it can happen with any dog. But this disturbing development raises question about rehoming and what levels of professionalism must entail it. Also about supervision of minors with dogs and how children should be taught on how to handle dogs.
- Ali Kohlman We hv numerous Pitbull bite the children to death over here. I think it is illegal now to hv one in town if I am not mistaken
- Anthony Siva Balan Thanasayan Pitbulls are good dogs - just bad owners. They used as service dogs in US and UK. Yes, some states classify them as dangerous. They need education. Breed specific legislation ban has never reduced dog bites. Rather increased by those outside the "banned breeds".
- Tony's Basement And as much as the shelter should responsible and vet adopters more stringently, the parents should share the blame. They should not have taken in such a dog without prior knowledge and experience with handling.
ALSO, it's strange, curiouser that the BBC has named the breed as a bulldog when it isn't. The dog is a FRENCH MASTIFF, pics and article here
http://www.mirror.co.uk/...Her mother Jodi picked up a knife and stabbed the 'Turner and Hooch' French Mast...See more - Tony's Basement Another thing, the way it was described "grabbed her in its jaws and began shaking her like a rag doll" could indicate more rough play on the part of the dog and not a violent attack.
An experienced owner/handler of powerful breeds would have been able to stop and correct that instantly - Anthony Siva Balan Thanasayan Apparao Applanaidu I agree with you. Dogs should never be left with small children unsupervised. More so being a rescued stray. It is for one of these reasons why Petpositive shys away from using them with disabled and elderly persons. There is a nutcase animal NGO that criticises us for this - now they know why.
- Anthony Siva Balan Thanasayan Tony's Basement U obviously are very knowledgeable on dog upbringing. I totally agree with U the rescue group has to answer but no one more than the parents. Thanks for your critical update on the story and pointing out the proper breed that was involved. I believe there must already have been warning signs ignored by parents. It couldn't have been sudden.
- Tony's Basement There is more to this story than meets the eye. Who in their right-mind will adopt a full-grown French-Mastiff WITHOUT prior handling experience?
- Anthony Siva Balan Thanasayan Read the story Vivian V. Kulasingham The dog was mauling the child and mother had to stab it to death to make it let go.
- Alan S Tan Ali Kohlman said ->>>>We hv numerous Pitbull bite the children to death over here. I think it is illegal now to hv one in town if I am not mistaken. MY RESPONSE to this is you are mistaken. People are notoriously bad at identifying dog breeds. The pitbull is a victim of bad press. Just like at one time bloodhounds were.. because they were used to hunt down slaves, alsations.... rotties... all had to deal with bad publicity. But know this... .the two dogs least likely to bite a vet is the Golden Retriever and the Pitbull. Pitbulls have no aggression towards humans. My little girl was bitten by my minipin/silky for pulling its tail. She can safely poke the pitbull in the eye. Do you know what a pitbull looks like?
- Alan S Tan on a separate note... the article says that they have bereavement counsellors there. Here we have shoot off their mouth politicians. We got the short end of the stick.
