A Bicycle Rider Escapes Death With A Rottweiler

aNt's aNgle: I just called up a dog owner in Petaling Jaya and chided him for being irresponsible for his dogs.

This morning at 7am, a Rottweiler belonging to the owner, ran out of one of his welfare homes for the aged and chased someone in a bicycle, almost knocking him off and killing him in the accident.

The victim called me up and wanted MBPJ to take action against the owner for letting his dog run loose without a leash outside his compound.

When I finally got to the owner by telephone by the end of the day I firmly told him that his action of not being responsible with his pet could end him up with a lot of trouble with the law.

I questioned him as to why his dog was out so early in the morning without a leash. Was it because some people were too lazy to take the Rottie out to do its business? I was also quick to remind him that the poop should then be collected and disposed off properly.

I also asked the owner whether letting the dog out was a regular practice in the mornings? He also had no answers when I asked him who his regular vet was. His dogs - including a mongrel of 7-months old also had no licence.

I told him to furnish me with all the answers as soon as possible. He is also to get licences for his dogs as soon as possible.

I also pointed out to him that what happened was not the dog's fault but entirely his. He said he got the Rottweiler after there was a robbery in his venue.

But I told him that he would be much better off with a burglar alarm. Also, if he wanted his dog to be a good guard dog, he also needed to treat it much, much better.

The owner said he was sincerely sorry for his actions and will make sure it doesn't repeat itself. At the end of the conversation, he was already asking me as to the proper size of a suitable kennel for his Rottweiler.

Do you have other suggestions for cases like these? If yes, please share them.

The problem with many dog owners is obviously their sheer ignorance of how to take care of the species properly. They acquire their dogs merely for status; and specific breeds on hearing what they are supposed to be capable of (often wrong information). Basically, different breeds have different needs. Huskies, for example, must be given at least two hours of exercise every day. Further, there are specific ways of training and communicating with dogs. My first Rottie was a massive 58 kg when he got to be an adult, but he had never hurt anyone. My present one is a five-month old puppy; he will grow even bigger than my last Rottie, as his body is already 102 cm. He is obedient and gentle.
