Radio Australia: Most People Predict Narrow Win For BN But Hard To Say Until Sunday Itself As Malaysians Known To Decide At Last Minute

UMNO faces challenge as Malaysians head to the polls

Updated 30 April 2013, 22:43 AEST
When Malaysians go to the polls on Sunday it will be the first time in the country's history where the winner isn't known in advance.

The ruling UMNO coalition is one of the world's longest serving governments - it's been unbeaten since the country won independence in 1957.
But this year UMNO has a tough fight on its hands from the multi-ethnic Pakatan Rakyat coalition - led by the charismatic former deputy premier Anwar Ibrahim.

It's been gaining ground with promises end rampant corruption and change controversial policies that favour majority ethnic Malays over ethnic Chinese and Indians.

Joanna McCarythy spoke to the presenter of Radio Australia's Connect Asia program, Liam Cochrane, who is in Malaysia for the poll.
