Malaysian ruling Barisan National coalition has axed four current and former ministers from its line-up of candidates to contest next month's general election.

A nominee list shows that Information Minister, Rais Yatim, is among the controversial figures to be dropped.

Mr Yatim has been the target of online abuse for comments seen as opposing freedom of expression.
Joining him is the country's former health minister, Chua Soi Lek, who resigned in 2008, following the release of a video online, that showed him having sex with his mistress despite being married.
Others figures to who got the axe include current Tourism Minister, Ng Yen Yen and former women's affairs minister, Shahrizat Jalil.

Both BN leaders have been accused of corruption.

On Monday, Prime Minister Najib Razak promised a 'transformational team' in a bid to reinvigorate the governing coalition.

"This is to satisfy the demands of voters who want to see Barisan Nasional and UMNO change and reform," he said.

Barisan Nasional, which has ruled Malaysia since independence in 1957, is facing its toughest election contest to date.

The Coalition is being challenged by a three-party opposition alliance, known as Pakatan Rakyat, which is led by former deputy prime minister, Anwar Ibrahim.

In 2008, BN lost its crucial two thirds majority in Parliament, with the local media calling it an "electoral tsunami".

Malaysians will go to the polls on May 5.
