No Jail For Joey Killers

PET+BLOGSPOT: Animal cruelty rears its ugly head everywhere. If you think it only happens in Malaysia; think again. Thanks to Kumaresh A for alerting us to this story:

Conviction, but no jail, for three youths who tortured and killed baby kangaroo

Brutal attack on baby kangaroo

(Warning : distressing scenes) video showing a senseless attack on a kangaroo has been used by prosecutors to argue for a tougher sentence ...

Chilling footage of the savage attack shocked the nation after it was released by the Herald Sun for the first time last week.

The graphic 35-second film showed the animal being slapped, punched, kicked and thrown by its tail.
It sparked calls for the men to be jailed immediately.

During the film, which was shot by one of the attackers on a mobile phone, Scott Saunders is seen repeatedly hitting the frightened animal with a stick before slapping it several times in the head.
One witness said the kangaroo looked like it "had been so traumatised it just stood there in terror".
Shortly after the initial attack Hunter kicked the already-injured joey in the head, sending it airborne.

The limp baby roo is then picked up by the tail and thrown several metres before it slams into a tree trunk.

The men were heard laughing throughout the film.

Brett Saunders and Zachary Hunter were fined $800 and placed on good behaviour bonds after pleading guilty to their part in the attack in August.

Scott Saunders, the brother of Brett, also pleaded guilty to his involvement and was fined $2500 and placed on a good behaviour bond.

The sentences were appealed in a landmark action launched by Victoria’s Director of Public
Prosecutions in a push for tougher sentences for animal cruelty offenders.

This morning County Court judge Frances Millane set aside the sentences and convicted all three men.

She said while all men had “been subjected to a strong community backlash” a message had to be sent to the public about cruelty to animals.

She sentenced Brett Saunders and Hunter to community corrections orders that will require them to undertake unpaid community work.

Scott Saunders was sentenced to two months' imprisonment, wholly suspended for eight months.
Judge Millane said as well as being the “ringleader” of the group, he had shown little remorse since the incident.

But wildlife activists said the court missed an opportunity to prove it was serious about animal cruelty.

Australian Society for Kangaroos spokeswoman Fiona Corke said she had hoped Scott Saunders would serve an immediate term of imprisonment.
“It’s really not good enough,” she said.
