DATELINE AMPANG, SELANGOR
A special task force to look into effective and humane stray animal management will be set up soon by the Majlis Perbandaran Ampang Jaya (MPAJ) local council.
This was decided at yesterday morning's meeting chaired by councillor S Supiramany.
As many as a dozen people met at Councillor Supiramany's service centre in Jalan Kampung Cheras Baru here to come up with proper and workable ways to manage strays in and around the municipality.
The meeting was arranged after local animal lovers Uma Thyagaraj and her husband (2nd & 1st from left) had complained of alleged cruelty of stray dogs by dogcatchers hired by MPAJ.
They claimed that several strays that were caught recently were put down before seven days of their capture - violating the council's own by laws procedure in destroying stray animals.
They together with other animal rights activists want MPAJ to be transparent in how and where animals are put down after they are caught by the private dogcatchers.
The meeting decided to set up a canine advisory team, much like the ones in the councils of Petaling Jaya and Klang to better deal with dog problems in the municipality.
It was agreed that councillor Supira head the committee that will include invited animal welfare organisations.
During the meeting Mr Supira kept stressing that the rights and welfare of all animals - as living beings - must be respected and protect by all.
A couple of the other issues that were raised were responsible pet ownership and neutering dogs to prevent unnecessary births.
Although SPCA Selangor was invited to the meeting, its representatives did not turn up citing that they could not locate the venue.
"I was approached by Uma and the SPCA to help set up the meeting with the council," said Anthony Thanasayan, PETPOSITIVE President to PET+BLOGSPOT.
"As councillor of MBPJ and chairman of its Canine Advisory Team, I had been trying for more than a week to secure a meeting from MPAJ.
"It wasn't after I got in touch with Mr Supira when he managed to finally put together the meeting.
"The SPCA's no-show was most disappointing especially as they had complained to me that their requests for a meeting had fallen on the deaf ears of MPAJ.
"Then when we managed to get the golden opportunity, the NGO lost out on it by not being present," said Thanasayan.
The first canine committee meeting is expected to take place in the next few weeks after Hari Raya.
