PET+BLOGSPOT:
UPDATE: We have received confirmation that MBPJ is not catching dogs on Sunday. We, therefore, advise our readers to be very careful when receiving information from unscrupulous groups and their desperate attempts to try and sensationalise issues.
We have received enquiries from animal lovers in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, asking about the safety of their pets this weekend.
An urgent notice is being sent out by an animal group, which, we must add, unfortunately has a penchant for making up and sensationalising stories, claiming "a reliable source" saying that the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) is "embarking on a dog catching spree" over the next two days.
The group went on to state that the recent mauling to death of an elderly man had given "them (MBPJ) the excuse to do so."
Their so-called "red alert" which was shared over many online pages, including our Facebook, clearly made dog lovers to panic.
The group also went as far as to offer the MBPJ's Mayor's private number - which is extremely unethical - to pet-lovers to "protest against the bloodthirsty act."
However, unlike the unprofessional action of the group, we decided to do the right thing and check the facts with MBPJ itself.
A spokesperson said there was going to be NO special dog catching exercise over the weekend over the Subang Jaya incident.
He clarified that dog catching would go on as "normal" for about 4 hours per day in the mornings as they have been doing over the past two years.
MBPJ catches any dogs that are found on the streets daily, except on Wednesdays.
Animals that are caught are then surrendered to Paws Animal Welfare Society's shelter in Subang. MBPJ pays RM20.00 to Paws for each animal, whether they are a cat, kitten, dog or pup.
The animal shelter decides which ones are saved or put down painlessly.
The dogcatchers will not be going "all over PJ" as the animal group claims as they do not have enough staff for such a mission.
So the next time you happen to hear stories like these, check the facts first, so that you do not unwittingly play into a particular animal NGOs secret agenda that is best known to them.
If you are a true dog lover - and a responsible one - and have your pets in the safety of your home, you have absolutely nothing to worry about.
