THE names of the 24 councillors in the state have yet to be finalised and the mass swearing-in ceremony went ahead for the rest of the 264.

The 264 councillors took their oath in front of Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, state secretary Datuk Mohammed Khusrin Munawi, state executive councillor Ronnie Liu and Yaakob Sapari at Dewan Jubli Perak in Shah Alam.

“The respective political parties were supposed to submit the names to Khalid by the end of last month, but they did not meet the deadline,” said Liu.

He added that zones without councillors would be taken care of by other experienced ones.
“I wouldn’t say it isn’t going to affect the councils but the impact is not serious.

“The law requires a local authority to have a minimum of eight councillors but there is an average of 22 in each council,” he said.

All the 12 local councils in Selangor should have 24 councillors each. Among the local authorities with an incomplete set of councillors are Subang Jaya, Petaling Jaya, Sepang, Shah Alam and Ampang Jaya.

Liu did not comment on when the vacancies would be filled.

Khalid reminded the councillors to work as a team with the council staff.

“Councillors are intermediary between the people and the authority.

“The people have many requests — some of which are demanding — but try to find a solution for them by using the council workers,” he said.

He also thanked the councillors for accepting the role and challenge.
