Councillors For MBPJ Unveiled

PETPOSITIVE NEWSFLASH!

OBLADI, OBLADA HAH HAH HAH, HEE HEE HEE, HOO HOO HOO, BRA LA LA LA!

Looks like I'm in, folks, as councillor again in the Petaling Jaya City Council.

This was reported in The Star this morning.

And already I've been inundated with scores and scores of online and SMS messages on my BlackBerry.

The first of which was from a most unexpected person: Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, Minister of Women, Family and Community Development.

The Minister gave me her personal greeting with a warm handshake at the Indoor Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil yesterday.

"My heartiest congratulations to you Anthony," she said, adding, "Continue your good work in the council helping the disabled community in PJ and elsewhere."

"Congratulations for being picked as councillor!" wrote vociferous consumer activist and CEO of ERA Consumer Datuk  Marimuthu Nadason.

"Congrats on your reappointment! God bless and take care of you," said Datuk Dr S Kumar JP, a resident of section 6, where I serve as councillor.

Another resident of Section 6, this time the chairman of Rukun Tetangga Section 6, Rajesh Mansukhlal wrote:

"Congrats for officially being listed as one of the councillors of MBPJ in today's The Star."

A million thanks also go out to the Mentri Besar of Selangor and his able exco team, the Mayor of MBPJ and all of you for your unflinching support for my work.

You can be rest assured that I will work even harder in the best of my abilities to carry out my tasks.

Especially to my pet projects which are disability and animals.

Finally, I would like to sign off with the song "Life Goes On" which best describes how I'm feeling right now with my tasks and challenges ahead!

Thank you all. Muuaah!

(Thank most to the Special One who inspired me with this song and made it all happen)

Only three PAS reps in MBPJ

By EDWARD R. HENRY

THE number of PAS councillors in the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) has dropped from four to three in the new list — a development that may not go down well with the party.

There may be trouble brewing in the Selangor government over the issue. The new councillors are expected to be sworn in on Wednesday.

Six new councillors will be taking their oath together with the current 17 councillors.
One position previously held by PAS is vacant and according to a state source “could be given to PKR”.

Seven councillors who served from 2010 to Feb 29, 2012 were not reappointed.

Out of the seven Ahmad Yusof Ludin tendered his resignation and moved to Negri Sembilan while Muzammil Hafiz requested for a transfer to the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ).

The other five — Syed Abdul Malik Syed A. Hamid Al Jafree, Mak Khuin Weng, Megat Iskandar Megat Ahmad Supian, Kamarudin Suhaimi and Halimey Abu Bakar — were dropped for various reasons.

The six councillors coming in are non-governmental organisation duo Norliana Ahmad, 41, and Ahmad Akhir Pawanchik, 45, PKR member Harmony Ghani Ismail, 40, DAP member Lee Suet Sen, 42, an engineer and PAS duo Azri Mohamad Arish, 42 and Ghazali Daud, 58.

Former councillor Muzammil Hafiz, who is a PAS member said: “The vacant position must go to PAS.”

“Discussions are ongoing and the vacant position belongs to PAS. I believe it would be filled up at a later time.

“Sometimes such a situation happens and we have to be patient,” he added.

PAS grassroots members are eager to challenge the move to wrestle the PAS councillor’s seat from them and are eager to put forward several names of professionals to fill the vacant post.
From Feb 29, Petaling Jaya council’s sub-committee meetings were frozen in anticipation of the reshuffle of councillors.

Tenure for 288 local councillors for the 12 local authorities in Selangor ended in December 2011 but all were given an extension until Feb 29.

Petaling Jaya mayor Datuk Mohamad Roslan Sakiman when told that six new councillors would be coming into the council said: “Good, I will have new friends, new ideas. I hope they will inspire me.”

New councillors raring to serve

THE much-awaited list of Selangor local councillors for the 2012/2013 term is finally out with a number of new faces.

new
Derek Fernandez is retained as a Petaling Jaya councillor.
They comprised representatives from political parties and non-governmental organisations (NGO).

In Petaling Jaya City Council, six new councillors are expected to be sworn in on Wednesday  at the council's headquarters in Jalan Yoong Shook Lin.

Sources told Streets the new faces are Harmony  Ghani Ismail, 40 (PKR); Lee Suet Sen, 42 (DAP); Azri Mohamad Arish, 42 (PAS); Norliana binti Mohamad, 41 (NGO); Ghazali bin Daud, 58 (PAS); and Ahmad Akhir Pawan Chik, 46 (NGO).

One post is still vacant.

Seven names have been dropped from the line-up, namely Syed Abd Malik Syed A. Hamid Al Jafree (PKR); Mak Khuin Weng (DAP); Megat Iskandar Megat Ahmad Supian (NGO); Muzammil Hafiz (PAS); Ahmad Yusof Ludin (PAS); Kamarudin  Suhaimi (PAS); and Halimey Abu Bakar (PKR).
Lee Suet Sen, 42, said he was happy to be included in the line-up and he looked forward to starting his duties.

The entrepreneur said he was  waiting for the appointment letter from the council.

Fellow newbie, Harmony Ghani Ismail, 40, who is the PKR Kelana Jaya deputy youth chief said he was surprised when he received a call from the council on Friday afternoon, informing him of the good news.

"I did not expect to be chosen as there were other eligible candidates.

"I am aware of the responsibilities   but I am confident I will be able to serve the city folk well," he told Streets.

For Subang Jaya Municipal Council, Sazana Li from PKR is one of the new faces on the list, while Muzammil Hafiz (PAS) who was a PJ councillor, will now serve in Subang Jaya, with 15 others who were old faces.

Councillors Chang Kim Loong (NGO) and Chia Yew Ken (DAP) are making a comeback at the MPSJ.

Fuelled with a passion to serve the people, both Chang and Chia said they can't wait to resume their duties once everything is finalised.

Chia, who comes back under the DAP ticket, said he had missed lending a helping hand to the people after serving two terms as councillor previously.

"I inspire to do better than the last time and help Subang Jaya folk with whatever problems they have.

"I shall be focusing on   traffic problems, development as well as transport, among others," he said, adding that he would leave it to the council to assign a zone to him.

Chang, who took a break to concentrate on Federal tasks such as working on new housing laws, said he was happy to come back under the non-governmental organisation quota.

"I will ensure that building laws under the council are properly regulated and monitored and there are no occurrence of abandoned projects," he said.

The nine names missing are Roslan Shahir Mohd Shahir, Ismail Kamal Abdul Rahman, Tan Jo Hann, Cheah Sang Soon,  Robert Tan Siang Chiok, Rajiv Rishyakaran, Loka Ng Sai Kai and Noor Azam  Abdul Aziz.

Edward Ling had expressed his desire to quit late last year.

At press time, there were five vacant slots, comprising four for political parties and one for non-governmental organisations.

Meanwhile, council president Datuk Asmawi Kasbi told Streets that the swearing-in ceremony will only take place on March 14.

Asmawi is  away for a course and will return in time for the ceremony.

"It is my hope that the councillors would work diligently and cooperate  to solve problems faced by the rakyat," he said.

PKR Selayang branch women chief Salasiah Disa and Zailah Kamaludin of the Selangor and Federal Territory Women's Initiative For Research, Development and Advancement Association are the new faces at the Selayang Municipal Council.

Salasiah said she was caught unawares of the appointment and was inundated with calls from her peers congratulating her since Friday.

The 49-year-old said she would probably take over from Zone 20 councillor, A. Rahim Wahab, who is in charge of the Kuang area.

The Selayang Municipal Council are retaining 19 of its existing councillors. Five have been dropped and they are A. Rahim Wahab, Zulnizam Shahrani, Tan Hui Chuan, Low Hock Kheng, and Roslin Mohd. Rosli.

Shah Alam City Council public relations officer Shahrin Ahmad, meanwhile, said the swearing-in ceremony will take place as soon as Mayor Datuk  Mohd Jaafar Mohd Atan has gone through the list and  accepted the appointments.

"We can't delay this matter as it would mean delaying the decision-making process in the council level, particularly those made in our sub-committees.

"Those who have accepted their  appointments will be sworn-in first," he said.

Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim had recently said that the line-up for each local authority will be revealed by respective councils.

This is a departure from the previous practice where the state government, through its state executive councillor in charge of local government, study and research Ronnie Liu, would announced the line-up before the swearing-in ceremony was held at each council.

Although the term for the councillors  ended on Dec 31, it was extended twice to Jan 31 and Feb 29.

The councils only received the list of councillors for the new term on Friday. Additional reporting by Halim Said and C. Premananthini
