Dog Trouble In Kajang?

DATELINE PETPOSITIVE THERAPY CENTRE, PETALING JAYA:

REPORTS ARE COMING IN of a possible situation of animal cruelty in Kajang, in the state of Selangor.

An email message posted on the Net claims that a location where stray dogs are temporarily housed after being rounded up by the Majlis Perbandaran Kajang (MPKJ) have been cruel to the animals under their care.

The email was referring to an incident last Thursday where it claimed about 30 unwanted canines which some residents were feeding in Taman Bidara were subsequently caught and transported to Reko Central before they were locked up in a "small lorry without food and water."

Some of the animals in the vehicle were reported to be already dead whilst the others were fighting with each other in order to stay alive.

The lorry was covered with animal urine, faeces and blood.

There was even a mother dog with her puppies in the van.

The author of the email whose name has been deliberately kept anonymous in this Blog claimed to speak for animal lovers.

She said she and other animal lovers understood the need for the MPKJ to control the population of strays - and by euthanasia when necessary - but she went on to point out that the measures taken by the council should be done humanely and not to torture the animals both physically and mentally.

The author and her friends said they also tried to meet up with the relevant authorities in MPKJ but claim that they were brushed aside by the person who was in charge of the canine operation, a Mr Jaafar.

Commenting on the incident, Petaling Jaya City Councillor and Petpositive President Anthony SB Thanasayan said that the animal cruelty incident if true is terribly alarming, especially at a time when more local councils and members of the public were beginning to affirm the rights and welfare of all animals in Malaysian society.

Thanasayan said that he had contacted the relevant authorities in MPKJ who were equally shocked to hear about the incident. They promised an immediate investigation into the matter.

Thanasayan said he will meet up with MPKJ over the matter next week.
