Najib Expects Swift Action By Police On Cat Cruelty

CURRENT COMMENT

SYABAS to the Prime Minister for breaking his silence at last and speaking up on the cat cruelty issue.

Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak tweeted within the past hour:

"Like all cat-loving Malaysians I was saddened to hear about #petknode. I expect the authorities to take swift action."

With these latest comments, there is no more reason or excuse for the police force not to take action against the pet hotel's operators.

Meanwhile, here are a couple of reports from The Star as to the latest developments regarding the Petknobe issue:

Police probing pet hotel operators over cheating claims

PETALING JAYA: Police are investigating the Petknode Online Pet Store for cheating, following some 20 reports lodged by pet owners.

Selangor deputy police chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk A. Thaiveegan said police were in the midst of recording statements from the pet owners involved.

“We had a meeting with seven of the affected pet owners who told us that they had been cheated and had photographic evidence to back their allegations,” he said, adding that he had instructed the Commercial Crimes Investigations Department to investigate the matter.

SAC Thaiveegan said if police investigations showed that there was cheating involved, action would be taken against the operators.

“We sympathise with the affected pet owners and will investigate the matter thoroughly,” he said, adding that police had also recorded the statements of the pet store operators Shahrul Azuwan Adanan and Yushairi Khairuddin.

Pet owner Rahimah Ibrahim, 30, who attended the meeting at the Petaling Jaya police headquarters yesterday, said: “We were told that allegations of animal cruelty will be investigated by the Veterinary Services Depart-ment.

“SAC Thaiveegan also told us that police were gathering evidence of alleged cheating by the pet store.”
Rahimah hoped police would bring the pet store operators to justice, as their actions had led to the death of a number of cats under their care during the Hari Raya holidays.

It was reported that the cats were rescued after they were allegedly starved in the locked pet boarding premises in Damansara Damai here and Desa Moccis in Sungai Buloh.

Nine cats were found dead while the others appeared hungry, dirty and sickly.
It was also reported that numerous reports had been received by police following the incident.

Pet shop boys go into hiding

PETALING JAYA: The parents of the two men accused of abandoning and neglecting some 300 cats claim they do not know their whereabouts

Both Shahrul Azuwan Adanan and Yushairi Khairuddin, who own the Petknode Online Store, are missing.

“I believe my son has gone into hiding with his friend because he is frightened,'' said Shahrul's father Adanan Ibrahim, 56.

Both Shahrul and Yushairi came under heavy fire after some of the cats in their keeping had to be rescued as they were starving, dehydrated and left in a filthy condition at the pet hotel's premises last Sunday. Several of the owners have lodged police reports against the duo.

Shahrul's mother Norhana Bujang, 48, said he had not come home for Hari Raya and called to say he could not take time off because there were too many cats to take care of.

“He said he would be home on Tuesday but that did not happen,” said Norhana, bursting into tears.

She said Shahrul, who is the eldest of four children, rarely visited the family home in Batang Kali, the last time being more than a year ago.

“Besides running the cat boarding place, my son also has many cats of his own to care for,” she said.
Adanan urged Shahrul to come out of hiding and apologise in person for what happened.

In PORT DICKSON, the parents of Yushairi also said they do not know where he is.
“Yushairi has not contacted us since Hari Raya eve,” his father Khairuddin Abdullah, 60, said from his home in Bandar Sunggala near here.

Yushairi had called to apologise for not returning to celebrate the occasion as he said he had too many cats to look after, said Khairuddin, adding that his son, the youngest of two siblings, sounded cheerful during the conversation.

“We are puzzled as to what made him and his partner abandon the animals,” he said.

Although the duo were running a business, Yushairi would still bring strays back to his pet hotel and care for them.

Khairuddin said his son was an animal lover who would cry when an abandoned kitten he had picked up died.
