DATELINE PORT KLANG, SELANGOR:

PET LOVERS WHO NOT ONLY LOOK AFTER BUNNIES, HAMSTERS AND OTHER DOMESTICATED ANIMALS HAVE BEEN URGED TO TAKE EXTRA PRECAUTION TO KEEP THEIR FURRY MEMBERS OF THE THE FAMILY SAFE TONIGHT WHEN MALAYSIANS WILL START TO USHER IN THE YEAR OF THE BUNNY AT MIDNIGHT.

THIS IS THE SPECIAL MESSAGE THAT HAS BEEN ISSUED BY YANG BERHORMAT DR A XAVIER JAYAKUMAR, THE SELANGOR STATE EXECUTIVE HEAD FOR HEALTH, PLANTATION WORKERS, POVERTY AND A COMPASSIONATE GOVERNMENT.

The VIP was speaking at a press conference event after conducting a special inspection at the temporary animal shelter centre of the Klang Municipal Council (MPK) here yesterday morning.

"Dogs especially have special sensitivities to loud noises with their exceptional hearing abilities - the sound of loud fireworks can stress them greatly," Dr Xavier pointed out to pet-lovers in the royal town through the media.

"If you normally keep dogs outside of your homes, consider bringing them inside where they can feel more safe and away from the racket created by fireworks."

Canines waiting to be adopted by loving humans
He also reminded animal lovers who are returning to their hometowns during the occasion to make sure that their pets are properly cared for during their absence.

"In addition to looking after their pets needs and rights to food and a proper shelter, extra care should be taken to ensure that they do not become a nuisance to their neighbours where they have no choice but to call the respective local councils for help," he said to half a dozen reporters who had turned up to cover the event.

"Great care should be taken to ensure that no pets become abandoned during the holidays.

"If their pets are lost, owners must promptly check the shelter and reclaim them which is a right and responsible thing to do when one owns a pet animal.

"A fine will definitely be imposed on the owner as a costly lesson for their irresponsible act." He concluded.

Cows also victims of irresponsible owners
Echoing Dr Xavier's statement, MPK's Director of Health Mr Zulkifli Abbas confirmed that many pets inadvertently get abandoned during the festivities because of owners' carelessness.

Pet owners have seven days to reclaim their pets or they will be promptly put down.

There were a total of 186 dogs in the pound yesterday.

Last month alone MPK dogcatchers caught 444 canines out of which 248 were put down by the Department of Veterinary Services.
