Ipoh Echo: Spunk's Death Not In Vain

Spunk’s Legacy

The death of Spunk, the senior therapy dog and companion to an elderly woman which was shot by MBI enforcement officers early this month despite having a license will not be in vain.

Because of him all dogs will continue to live and all pet lovers can rest easy.

This is because the “Shooting of dogs in Ipoh will be banned with immediate effect”.

The order to effect this was given by MBI Secretary Dato Hj Abdul Rahim bin Mohd Ariff this morning after meeting with a half dozen animal welfare and rights groups.

The shooting created an up-roar amongst pet NGOs who stated that the shooting of dogs was inhumane.

The NGOs present today were Ipoh Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ISPCA), Noah’s Ark Ipoh, The Sanctuary Ipoh, SPCA Selangor and the Malaysian Animal-Assistant Therapy for Disabled and Elderly Association (Petpositive).

Also present were officers from the State Department for Veterinary Services.

MBI’s sub-committee, which was formed after the shooting of Spunk, will now work very closely with the Veterinary Services Department and NGOs on how to handle stray dogs.

Some of the measures proposed were to establish a pound for animals that were caught as well as the methods to be used to capture the animals.
NGO spokesperson, Anthony S. B. Thanasayan of Petpositive based in Selangor, said that Rahim would send a team from MBI next week to visit MPPJ and DBKL to study how the councils there caught dogs in a humane manner as well as its spay/neuter campaign.

Thanasayan said that the best outcome of the meeting though was that MBI would be visiting Spunk’s owner to apologise to her.

All thanks to you Ant. We only hope and pray that owners don't see this as a license to let their dogs roam freely and cause a nuisance. We will then be back to square one. Noah's Ark Ipoh will be on an aggressive education drive. Cheers.

Malika.

Well done Anthony, thanking you and your team from Selangor for coming all the way to Ipoh to put a stop to our long haunting horror of dog shooting.

This wouldn't have been possible w/o your involvement and concern.

Besides the apology that the council has said to the owner....I do hope the NGO's here would consider about offering a new pup/dog for Spunk's owner.

Thank you Again :)

Thank you Anthony for putting a stop to DOG SHOOTING. My husband and I were looking after three strays in Fair Park eventhough we have eight now six of our own. We used to catch them and bathe them and feed them everyday. We even got the dogs spayed and castracted. They were staying next door which was vacant. One day DBI came and shot all three of them. One died on the spot and the other two a few days later in agony. We were broken hearted because they never turned up during feeding time. Later we found out from DBI they had to shoot them because neighbours complained. Those dogs never disturbed anyone. They were so lovable and inseparable. They only started chasing and barking at people especially boys (how nice if parents could teach their children to be kind to animals)when they started to ill treat them by throwing stones, etc at them. We miss them dearly and blame ourselves because we couldnt afford to take them in.
