Claws out for man who abused pet

JOHOR BARU: A man here tied his dog to his car and dragged it for more than 100m on Friday, leaving a trail of blood on the road. The incident has been condemned by the Johor Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).

Its vice-chairman, Joseph Chia, said yesterday this was one of the worst cases of animal abuse the society had come across since it was set up 33 years ago.

He said the man's neighbour, who was leaving his house for work about 8am, saw the dog, which was chained to the rear bumper of a four-wheel-drive vehicle, being dragged along the road.
Tye Li Yen, 35, was so shocked he immediately stopped his car and confronted the dog owner.

"The pet owner merely got out of his car, untied the canine from the bumper and dragged it back into the compound of his house.

"The incident left a trail of blood on the road as the dog was bleeding all over," Chia said.

Tye, accompanied by Chia, lodged a report at the Johor Jaya police station at 11am on Friday. A complaint was also lodged at the state Veterinary Services Department.

Chia made two attempts to talk to the dog owner but to no avail.

In the police report, Tye said the dog owner, believed to be in his 60s, had chained his pet to the rear bumper of his vehicle and dragged the canine around Taman Molek.

"I am a pet owner myself and the incident has greatly disturbed me. I hope the authorities can stop this man from keeping animals from now on."

Tye, who has been living in Taman Molek for the past 16 years, said his neighbour kept very much to himself all these years.

"We can always hear him beating his dogs, which are always chained up.

"The canine in question actually barks constantly but no one in the neighbourhood has complained about it because we know that it is normal for dogs to be barking.

"Moreover, my neighbour hardly speaks to anyone so we also did not bother much about him," Tye said.


"However, after Friday's incident, he shouldn't be allowed to keep pets any more."

State Veterinary Services Department director Datin Paduka Dr Fauziah Embong said her officers had visited the dog owner and issued him a warning.

"We have treated the injured dog and we will continue to check on the welfare of the canine from time to time," she said.

However, she said the man denied having chained the dog to the rear bumper of his vehicle and also claimed that he loved his pets.
