Disabled protest public strip search of handicapped young man by Tesco

PETPOSITIVE BARKING NEWS!

DATELINE BANTING:

Nearly two dozen disabled persons, mostly in wheelchairs and walking sticks, staged a fiery protest at the Tesco store here for discriminating a handicapped shopper.

The wheelchair-user, a young man who uses an electric wheelchair was forced to take off his clothes in front of other shoppers and searched by the hypermarket security. The search only found him out to be an innocent customer from any charges of shoplifting.

The Independent Living and Training Centre (ILTC) in Rawang, also in the state of Selangor, brought about 20 of its members and staged a public demonstrating condemning the act.

"It's disgraceful how the handicapped in Malaysia are still being discriminated against in this day and age - and of all bodies, a respected shopping centre like Tesco," said Francis Siva, a tetraplegic and president of the ILTC. He spoke to PET+BLOGSPOT after the demo which was held at 1pm today in Tesco Banting itself.

Meanwhile, all local councillors in Selangor were formerly sworn-in at the Dewan Jubilee hall in the state of Selangor this afternoon.

The occasion was officiated by Chief Minister of Selangor, Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim as well as Ronnie Liu, the head of local councils in the state.

Our President Anthony SB Thanasayan was one of three disabled councillors who were sworn in today. Whilst Thanasayan is from Petaling Jaya the other two are from Klang and Kuala Langat.

In their speeches Khalid and Ronnie called for a higher quality of councillors who are finely tuned with the people.

Ronnie said that he would be presenting each councillor with an empty file soon so that they could fill it up with their reports in order to keep the state executive updated on their activities. Tan Sri Khalid on his part called for councillors to work with one another and for a common cause.
