Do You Know Where The Feathers In Your Pillows Come From?
I am the oldest living person that I know of with my condition called spina bifida. I am a columnist on disability and councillor for the city of Petaling Jaya city.
I turn 53-years old today. My birthday wish today is to spread this message to stop cruelty on birds like in the PETA video below.
Do you know where the feathers in your pillows and clothes come from? I didn't until I watched this video and vowed never to buy products with feathers again. I hope you will too. Thank you for making my wish come true. May God bless you!

Animal Rights Demo Today At Indian High Commission
DATELINE KUALA LUMPUR:
Animal rights and welfare groups are expected to gather outside the building of the High Commission of India later today to display their utter outrage in protest of plans of an Indian biotechnology company to establish an animal-testing facility in Malaysia soon.
The event, which is scheduled to take place at No 2, Jalan Taman Duta off Jalan Duta in KL just before 1pm, is being organised by the US-based popular group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals or PeTA.
According to the international organisation Vivo Bio Tech Ltd plans to spend a whopping US$140 million dollars for the facility.
"There are no laws to protect animals in laboratories in Malaysia," observes PeTA.
"Vivo Bio Tech plans to ship beagles and monkeys to the lab for experiments," it said in a statement.
"These animals would be condemned to lives of pain, loneliness, misery and death, with no government oversight to monitor the conditions they are kept in.
"Experimenters can legally burn the animals, cut them open, shock them, poison them, socially isolate them, starve them, dehydrate them, forcibly restrain them, addict them to drugs, damage their brains and more."
The KL protest is being organised by PeTA's Asia Team.

Sexy Kellan (Twilight) Lutz Talk About His Dog Kola For PETA
Smoldering Twilight star Kellan Lutz stars in a PETA ad with his adorable rescued mutt Kola to tell fans, "Adopt, Don't Buy." Every time someone purchases a dog or cat from a pet store or breeder, one fewer home is available for an animal desperately waiting in an animal shelter or roaming the streets.Each year, more than 7 million dogs and cats are left at animal shelters in the U.S.—and nearly half of those must be euthanized because of a lack of good homes. Kellan explains, "It's our job to take [animals] under our wing and take care of them and give them a place to live."
Animals sold in pet shops often come from "puppy mills," where they are housed in cramped, filthy, and unhealthy conditions and lack proper veterinary care. And in light of the current animal overpopulation crisis, it's clear that there's no such thing as a responsible breeder. Kellan tells PETA, "Kola is my best friend." If you're thinking about bringing an animal into your home, be sure always to adopt and never to buy.

Another MBPJ epoch-making occasion for the disabled and the elderly
LOCAL HISTORY IS BEING CREATED once again today in the city of Petaling Jaya.
And this spells good news for the disabled and elderly communities.
Later this afternoon, representatives from nearly a dozen local councils in Selangor will assemble at the headquarters of the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) to attend the latter's regular monthly meeting on disability concerns.
However, what will make today's meeting extraordinary is that this will be the first time in almost two years that all 11-councils in Selangor will be having a serious pow-wow on the problems faced by handicapped and senior citizens within the local governments.
"This will be our biggest break yet to be able to share with other councils the advances that have been made by MBPJ for disabled-friendly access, amongst others," added Thanasayan who is also President of Petpositive.
According to him today's meeting will also be an opportunity for the other councils to share on what progress they have made in making their towns and cities accessible to all persons.
The MBPJ disabled councillor strongly believes that if the local councils don't intervene to help the disabled communities, the handicapped's future might as well be doomed.
This afternoon's two-hour meeting will be chaired by Thanasayan and Marhaini. A press conference will be held after the deliberations at 4.30pm.
New Straits Times Press and news portal Malaysiakini have confirmed their attendance.
PETA is mad about the fact that KFC, according to them, refuses to stop their horrific abuse on chickens such as having their throats slit whilst they are alive and dunking them monstrously into scalding-hot water in the same condition.
IN VIEW OF THIS PETPOSITIVE ALSO CALLS FOR THE BOYCOTT OF KENTUCKY FRIED CHICKEN WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT!
Here it the email which was sent to our President last night:
Dear Activists,
PETA Asia will be holding a series of demonstrations against KFC in Malaysia and we need your help! Join us in protest against KFC’s refusal to eliminate the worst abuses that chickens suffer in the factory farms and slaughterhouses of its suppliers, including crippling injuries because of cruel breeding practices and the overuse of drugs, having their throats slit while they are still conscious, and being dunked into tanks of scalding-hot water while they are still alive and able to feel pain.
Protests will be held as follows:
· Kota Kinabalu (first time!) – Sunday 28 Feb 2010
· Penang – Thursday 4 Mar 2010
· Kuala Lumpur – Saturday 6 Mar 2010
We need your help to make these demos successful! Please contact me if you’re able to help in any of the following ways or know someone who can:
· We need a volunteer who speaks Bahasa Malay to attend each demo. The volunteer would be assisting us in speaking to the public and the media. If you’re not comfortable speaking to the media, we’d love to have you help by passing out leaflets.
· We need volunteers to demonstrate in costumes, hold signs, or pose in cages, at each demo.
· We need volunteers who can make follow-up calls in Malay to media outlets. The calls need to be done on the afternoon before and/or the morning of the demo. The calls are very simple and are just intended to verify that the media outlet has received our news release. We are grateful for any help with media calls—even five calls can make a big difference!
· We need volunteers who can translate our news releases from English to Malay. This would need to be done a week before the demo.
· We need a volunteer who can check out KFC locations in Kota Kinabalu and Penang before we arrive to make sure that they are suitable for demos.
· We need volunteers in Penang and Kota Kinabalu to help us compile a media list of local newspapers, TV stations, and radio stations so we can ensure our events get maximum media attention.

Why is PETA Asia-Pacific targeting KFC Malaysia? Each year, hundreds of millions of chickens raised and killed each year for KFC Malaysia are tortured for their entire abbreviated lives. They are drugged and bred to grow so large that many become crippled under the weight of their massive upper bodies. Many have their throats slit while they are still conscious and are scalded to death in defeathering tanks. KFC Malaysia has ignored the recommendations of animal welfare advisory panel for years. WEEKEND VIEW: Zoos Are Still Important But They Need To Be Better Managed Say Our Readers
PET+BLOGSPOT FEEDBACK FROM READERS ON ZOO POLL RECENTLY:THE SEXY CELEBRITY in the picture had no qualms about taking it all off to prove a point recently.
His message: Zoos are bad. And we should stay away from them.
Quite a shocking and striking message, I'm sure for Malaysians, at least.
The guy I'm referring to, by the way, is 32-year old Diether Ocampo - one of the hottest actors and male models in the Philippines.
He was more than willing to drop his clothes for stripes (see picture) in one of PETA's latest publicity campaign aimed at getting zoos to shut down permanently so that all animals can be free.
PETA is of course that very popular (and controversial to governments) group for animal rights. They are both famous and "infamous" for the extremes they are willing to go to just to defend animals. They promote vegetarianism for instance, as one of their missions to create a better world for animals.
I personally have no quarrel with the NGO. I don't also share all of their convictions - yet.
However, that doesn't stop me from acknowledging the good job that they do in their undying dedication for animals.
Many of their projects and activities often even put other animal groups to shame.
Recently, PETPOSITIVE decided to run one of PETA's campaign on our Weblog. We held an opinion poll to gauge what our readers thought and felt about zoos.
Out of the almost three dozen votes we received only four respondents thought that zoological parks should be closed down.
Although there were a larger percentage of readers who felt that it was definitely not good to keep any animals under any sort of confinement, they appeared to remain non committal about the idea of shutting down zoos altogether.
Whilst the overwhelming majority of voters felt that the real problem with zoos today is really one of poor management; it was interesting to note that only a few voters felt that zoos play an educational role in society.
Was this just an oversight in the poll exercise? Or do visitors to zoos feel that they really learn nothing from their trips there?
I was also surprised to note that not many bloggers thought that zoos particularly kept animals safe from predators and healthy - compared to their natural jungle setting.
Here are some of my personal thoughts on the subject: (Not PETPOSITIVE's official point of view, but plain ol' me talking here.)
I think that zoos are important because of the irreplaceable role they play in bringing wild animals closer into our lives. This is probably one of the most effective ways to raise awareness about such creature but also to raise our appreciation about them.
Most people are not lucky or rich enough to be able to take an airplane out to the nearest jungle continent. So a zoo within a city is very convenient.
Zoos are for most people the only way in which we human beings can come close to animals, interact and learn about them. In fact, some of our animal-assisted therapy sessions in PETPOSITIVE for the disabled and elderly are based on regular visits to our local zoos.
In Zoo Negara (ZN) in Kuala Lumpur for instance, the disabled do not have to pay for tickets. Their carers need only to pay half the rate if they are coming with a disabled visitor. At least, this was how it was a couple of years or so ago when I last visited ZN.
There was also a disabled toilet near the ape section. Most, if not all of where the caged animals were located were accessible by wheelchair.
Not many people realise this but zoos have actually over the years unlocked many previously hidden information about wildlife that we knew little about.
Rather than a roving camera on a jeep in rough terrain - as we see on TV, it is zoological parks that teaches us important information and facts about wildlife.
The books that we read and the information we amass through the Internet search engines often come from scientists who have been studying animals in zoos situations rather than in the wild jungles where the truth is, it is hard to access the creatures.
I seriously wonder how many animals were actually flushed out from their original surroundings just for a photo shoot by the so-called high octane animal adventures in the wild with their cameras and flashlights.
Zoos also have played - and still very much do - critical roles in helping to to save animals from extinction. One perfect example is the San Diego Zoo in the US and the Californian Condors.
The San Diego Zoo which I had the privilege to visit quite a few years ago was at that time recognised as one of the best zoological parks in the world.
What was special about the zoo is that they tried to make each enclosure as close to the wild animals' natural habitat as possible.
By the way, the place was so big that visitors often have to take a bus to get from one section to another!
I guess the argument for and against zoological parks will continue to rage over the years to come. Animal sanctuaries may be a better alternative. But then again, the issue over there will surely also be about proper management of the area as well.
